how do the two compare?

isn.t it a sad story?

it makes me think of the fate of some other nations …..

e.g. armenia

2 world wars have given germany a bad reputation ….

and some think that all Germans have been Nazis since the beginning ….

what do you know about germany between about the years 800 and 1900?

once upon a time all german speaking people lived in one and the same country, together with french and italian and polish speaking people, and peacefully

in the times before nationalism ….

You're asking if the civilization of the goths/ostrogoths/etc is comparable to Germany society in 2023?

around 800 there were german speaking people, but no real germany

one spoke of the empire or „das Reich“ …. but not of germany

Germany during the Roman Empire was terrible. Bad dental health, restaurants were crap, no fast cars. Germany of today is a tremendous improvement.

Uh no, the German people and the decisions they made are what gave them their reputation.

what do you know of the germany before Kaiser Wilhelm the Second?

dis-unity has been the problem for germany ….. for a long time ….

now just imagine the two world wars had not happened

or you may compare germany in 1910 and germany in 1945

Brings up a good question, has the rise of nationalism been a good thing or a bad thing?

it has been a most terrible thing

look at the fate of austria-hungary

once it was a mighty empire of many nations.
after world war one it was split of. ….. and many german speaking regions were oppressed by the new nations …..…..

and often cruelly oppressed ….

and many german speakers were expelled or killed ……

austria-hungary had been a multi.national empire, where many languages were used

the new masters then expelled and. or … killed off most of their german speaking minorities

while the rest of the world did not take much notice

The HRE was a bunch of loosely connected tiny principalities and city/states, ruled(sorta) mostly by Habsburgs(I think I spelled that right, working from memory). Germany today is a single political entity somewhat smaller than the HRE at its peak. Other than sharing some geography, they are completely different.
