German Unity Day [W:192]

“The Berlin Airlift officially ended on 30 September 1949, after fifteen months. In total, the USAF delivered 1,783,573 tons and the RAF 541,937 tons, totalling 2,326,406 tons, nearly two-thirds of which was coal, on 278,228 flights to Berlin.[6] The Royal Australian Air Force delivered 7,968 tons of freight and 6,964 passengers during 2,062 sorties. The C-47s and C-54s together flew over 92,000,000 miles (148,000,000 km) in the process, almost the distance from Earth to the Sun.[6] At the height of the Airlift, one plane reached West Berlin every thirty seconds.[7]

Gee, I wonder how many Germans would have starved or frozen without those pilots?

Here’s a hint— a lot.
Nobody doubts the value and sacrifice of the men who conducted the airlift to West Berlin.

.....did you not read his post?

His babbling about “zombies” and being “pelted” with candy was pretty damn doubtful.

We denied your 95 year old veterans to land in Berlin at the 70th berlin airlift celebration. They cried big tears because we did not allow those old zombies with no actual flight certificate, old aircrafts with no german certificates to land here and also banned them from pelting candy on us.

The best part was the angry 95 year old zombie who angrily saod he will never again come to Germany, also not at the 75 year celebration. In 5 years that old fart is long underground anyways.

They were denied because the proper documentation wasn't filed in time.

Im talking about 2020. Would you want some 95 year old fly over Wahsington and throw candy out on people on the streets?

It was banned here and they acted totally childish

Unlike you, I do not respond to Rostocker's posts. I make a rule of paying no attention to anyone who has been personally rude to me.

Nevertheless, it was a very clear example of someone disparaging the men and their efforts.

What‘s really childish is babbling about “zombies”. It’s a symbolic act based on commemorating the actual, heroic efforts of elements of the US Air Force and allied air forces to keep Germans fed. You disrespecting that is pretty pathetic.

I was never rude to you and so far you always respond to my posts. Last time yesterday,

I dont see it that way. There are many things wrong regarding that.

1.Those aircrafts are not certified to fly and propably not airworthy. They failed to bring the documents.

2. The pilots are 95 years old...

What if they crash? Right into Berlin?

3. They are selfish. They wanted throw candy out a flying aircraft. Make the german people statists in their stunt. I dont want get candy thrown at me. Im not a monkey.

They could have landed at some airport and show their aircrafts and evrything would have been fine without that stunt.

Gail Halvorsen, one of the many Airlift pilots, decided to use his off-time to fly into Berlin and make movies with his hand-held camera. He arrived at Tempelhof on 17 July 1948 on one of the C-54s and walked over to a crowd of children who had gathered at the end of the runway to watch the aircraft. He introduced himself and they started to ask him questions about the aircraft and their flights. As a goodwill gesture, he handed out his only two sticks of Wrigley's Doublemint Gum. The children quickly divided up the pieces as best they could, even passing around the wrapper for others to smell. He was so impressed by their gratitude and that they didn't fight over them, that he promised the next time he returned he would drop off more. Before he left them, a child asked him how they would know it was him flying over. He replied, "I'll wiggle my wings."[50]

The next day on his approach to Berlin, he rocked the aircraft and dropped some chocolate bars attached to a handkerchief parachute to the children waiting below. Every day after that, the number of children increased and he made several more drops. Soon, there was a stack of mail in Base Ops addressed to "Uncle Wiggly Wings", "The Chocolate Uncle" and "The Chocolate Flier". His commanding officer was upset when the story appeared in the news, but when Tunner heard about it, he approved of the gesture and immediately expanded it into "Operation Little Vittles". Other pilots participated, and when news reached the US, children all over the country sent in their own candy to help out. Soon, major candy manufacturers joined in. In the end, over three tons of candy were dropped on Berlin[50] and the "operation" became a major propaganda success. German children christened the candy-dropping aircraft "raisin bombers".[78]

It‘s literally exact opposite of being selfish.

You whining because your pride is hurt over historical events doesn’t change the facts.

1. There were certified to fly.

2. With younger pilots.

3. Your version of "Selfish" is rather "special" and they are giving.

As your own text says "propaganda".

Those pilots wanted to celebrate themself and make the people of Berlin their statists last year.

There is no need to fly with super old aircrafts amd extremly old pilots over Berlin and throw candy at people who propably dont want participate at this stunt.

Polls showing the Berliners don't want this?

“Their statists“? What the hell does that even mean?

And no, they aren’t “celebrating themselves”. They are celebrating an act of heroism which kept the people of Berlin warm and fed. “Former” LSSAH thugs may have been living well but most Germans weren’t by 1948-1949. The airlift kept a lot of people from starving or freezing once the Soviets tried to put the squeeze on.

The initial event, which is also being commemorated, certainly wasn’t “propaganda“.

People like seeing old aircraft flying aorund. It‘s the whole reason they have airshows.

Again, your pride being hurt doesn’t lessen the importance of the event.

What are you talking about? Im talking about 2019. I have no problem with them helping in 1947. That was great. Thanks. But that does not mean that i want 95 year old man fly with uncertified oldtimer aircrafts over us and throw candy at me.

Your opinion and desires are irrelevant.

You aren't a Berliner yet you wish to speak for them.

And trust me.

No one is sharing their candy with you.

Unless Rostock magically moved to Berlin in the last twenty four hours, nobody would be ”flying over you” regardless. If it hurts your pride so much just stay out of the city—but don‘t start babbling about “statists“ and expect anyone to take you seriously.

(Its also rather amusing that you apparently think not a single person in Germany is capable of flying a C-54.)

1. Berlin died the stunt, so it appears the local authorities share my opinion.
2. They wanted to fly themself amd the aircrafts were not airworthy by german standards, they failed to provide tze certificats.
3. Throwing candy on random people is plain and simply rude. It also can cause imjury and property damage. That stuff falls down several hundred meters and accelerates to certain speeds.

The only reason the event was canceled was due to paperwork not being filed in time.

Stop lying.

1. Because the paperwork wasn’t filled out in time(which is also rather pathetic, but I get that you Germans are absolutely obsessed with the stuff).
2. And again, nobody in Germany is capable of operating the aircraft? The C-54 is not a small plane. There’s plenty of room for “back-up” pilots onboard in case of medical emergency.
3. Listening to you wail about “zombies“ because your pride is hurt is rude. A symbolic act relating to a major act of heroism....is not. It’s also pretty pathetic that you are babbling about candy causing “property damage”.

1. Not just because the paperwork. The pilots had no certificate to be able to fly. The aircrafts were not certified and thus not airworthy. This is our capital. We dont allow some super old man to fly oldtimer aircrafts over the absolute red security zone. Over the Reichstag, next to the chancellors office. Beside that, yes we have laws. You have to follow the laws. Those laws are there for a reason.

2. What can a back up pilot do when the 95 year old pilot gets a stroke or heartattack and goes into a dive? Might remember you what happened last time when you let a 70 year old fly an old aircraft?

3. Its not hurt pride. And what kind of symbolic act? They want celebrate themself and want make Berlin their theatre?

And yes, throwing candy from several hundred meters altitude accelerates it to pick up high velocity. It can definitly hurt people and damage cars / windows.

They got offered to land on a airstrip outside Berlin, they did not want that. Thats ok, doesnt mean we have to play statists in their theatre show.
