Their flights home were arranged by U.S. Embassy officials, Gastonguay said.

That's some extreme ****ing irony right there. Why didn't they just stay in Chile?

The metaphorical possibilities are so ripe: delusional fundie extremist creationists founder upon the facts.

Probably couldn't find any unseaworthy vessels there. Returning to AZ to purchase another dingy.

Certainly they are always welcome, however it does seem strange that those who rage in bitterness and hatred because others have found peace and contentment in their faith cannot resist sneaking into the Religious Section as frequently as possible.

Yeah, them Gastonguays seem like real models of "peace and contentment".

A Darwin Award would mean that they were removed from the gene pool. They were not.
No, they just removed themselves from the competition... for now.

Wonder why they didn't take a more reliable mode of transportation but instead felt the need to do it on their own?

Don't know. Kiribati is a long way off. One would think that a plane ticket to Australia with subsequent arrangements would make more sense. Regional coastal sailing is not nearly the same thing as that which they attempted. Hopefully they are now a bit wiser.

Sometimes it's the attempt that earns you the award rather than succeeding.

It appears that the 'master' of the family Gastonguay has not become wiser

If at first you don't win a Darwin award, try and try again

When I saw "fundamentalists" in the thread title I thought it was about liberal fundamentalists who, IMO, are the real zealots.

Liberal Fundamentalism « The Righter Report

And then in the link there was this on Ann Coulter's book 'Godless - the Church of Liberalism':

In her book “Godless: The Church of Liberalism,” Coulter throws open the doors of the Church of Liberalism, showing us its sacraments (abortion), its holy writ (Roe v. Wade), its martyrs (from Soviet spy Alger Hiss to cop-killer Mumia Abu-Jamal), its clergy (public school teachers), its churches (government-controlled schools, where prayer is prohibited but condoms are free), its doctrine of infallibility (as manifest in the “absolute moral authority” of spokesmen from Cindy Sheehan to Max Cleland), and its cosmology (in which mankind is an inconsequential accident).

Beware of liberal fundamentalism!

LOL!

"Funny" the stuff people will write when they get paid for it.

I dont have a problem with their decision to leave. Someone doesnt like their surroundings they should change them. I just wonder if maybe they missed the message God was sending (if you believe in that sort of thing) with the storm and then being sent back home. Kinda like the old joke with the punchline "I sent a cop, a boat, and a helicopter...WTF?"

I hadn't seen that. Thanks. Ah well. It's hard to say exactly what is influencing his decision, but one could reasonably hope that he would hold his family's safety and well being in higher regard.

They're apparently loading back up as we speak:

Why Kiribati? They're tiny little islands in the Pacific.

Chance of success: 0

Imagine the jokes we'd be hearing now if the Pilgrims had failed.
