I am purchasing a copy of Liberty and Tyranny by Mark Levin. I heard it is a fantastic piece of modern conservative literature (and Mark is the man) but I want to read some opposing views as well. What would you Liberals suggest to be the Liberal equal?

"Winnie The Pooh and The Blustery Day".

lol

Seriously nothing? I wanted to delve into the liberal psyche, but maybe it really is as shallow as I feared...

I hope for your sake that Mark Levin is easier to read than listen to.

Nothing personal but I just find his voice (and style) a bit annoying so I figured it may actually be easier on the ears in printed form.

Actually now that you have made me think about it possibly some of the very serious points he makes would be better delivered and therefore accepted by those who do not currently share them if there was just less arrogance and whining or at least the appearance of such.

Then again the arrogance and whining which seems so popular with the people normally delivering the conservative message (in media etc) could be part of why your not getting any responses from the opposing team.

Do you remember the outrage from the Left when Beck used mild humor to make similar points?

We might just as well keep going with anger and derision.

The possibilities are numerous but Kevin Phillips has many worthy titles: try "Wealth and Democracy".

For a look at the direction the U.S. is headed, try "Collapse" by Jared Diamond. It is an anthropological meditation on the factors behind the survival of some civilizations versus the disintegration of others.

I love his style, not only does he have incredible points, but its entertaining lol

Wealth and democracy sounds good..

Is collapse about america's future or an account of applicable historical events?

Stop seeing the world through a Communist A vs Communist B false paradigm!

If you want to balance out your perspective, read some libertarian / Anarcho-Capitalist books instead.

I used to support anarchy, then i grew up (true story)

Although I intend to read some Libertarian literature after these books.

Point taken, but since I enjoy Becks style even though I do not agree with everything he says, and find his delivery a fresh change that was long overdue I am a little biased on that one. ;)

Then again maybe its time to take control from the "stiffs" behind the party (I believe both parties actually), shuffle things up a bit, and start fresh since it is strongly needed, and long past due.

Liberals don't really churn out hate books like those on the right, so we usually read what's in the other 99% of the bookstore.

So many great books , but to focus on "liberal" here's a good sampling:

The Conscience of a Liberal by Paul Wellstone

Moyers on Democracy by: Bill Moyers

The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism by Naomi Klein

The Great Unraveling by Paul Krugman

Blinded by the Right: The Conscience of an Ex-Conservative by David Brock

God's Politics by: Jim Wallis

And anything by Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Frank Rich, Thom Hartmann, Eric Alterman, Gore Vidal, Amy Goodman, David Corn, Joe Conason, Lou Dubose, Jeremy Scahill.

And the best liberal periodical with great liberal writers is The Nation | Unconventional Wisdom Since 1865

I've never supported anarchy. I was born in the Soviet Union and was thoroughly brainwashed, then I moved to New Jersey and was thoroughly re-brainwashed - even voted for Gore in 2000! Then I started thinking for myself, which didn't go too well at first because I thought Michael Badnarik wasn't anti-war enough so I voted for a small anti-war candidate in 2004. And now I'm a free market capitalist - I have no need for government.

Good for you.

I just bought a copy myself. You'll have to let me know what you think of it.

I have never heard of Mark Levin. so his "equal" means nothing to me- it might be a very low standard for all I know about him.

Thank god you're here, I would have never found what I was looking for without you.

To be honest, I think Liberty and Tyranny was mediocre at best. If you want the original and better version read: Conscience of a Conservative by Goldwater.

Levin does have the most annoying voice in the world.

I recently read two great liberal books; both by the same author, Thomas Frank.

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Whats-Matter-Kansas-Conservatives-America/dp/0805073396"]What's the Matter with Kansas[/ame]

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Wrecking-Crew-How-Conservatives-Rule/dp/0805079882"]The Wrecking Crew[/ame]

Not so much on the Merits of liberal idealogy, but where conservative ideology is false in premise and fails often when applied to the U.S. system. Additionally, shows why so many Republicans are NOT conservative when in office.

I dont need a Liberal to tell me about conservatism, or sway my view, or tell me how republicans dont represent my view, Or where Conservatives went wrong, I know these things, those books would be a waste of money. I want a book that represents the Liberal Ideology, does that exist?

I listed several, guess you missed my post. Here's some more:

Why We're Liberals by Eric Alterman

Moyers on Democracy by Bill Moyers

A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn

Political Liberalism by John Rawls

I've never heard of Levin's work. Is it very intellectual like Kirk, Nisbet's or Weaver's? I just bought Christianity and culture which contains TS Elliot's The idea of a Christian society and Notes towards a definition of culture which seem excellent so far.

I don't know about liberalism but interesting more leftwing works include those of Kropotkin, Proudhon and Landauer.

Interesting. I'm not sure I'd call Klein's book necessarily liberal. I like Klein and I'm a conservative. Also Zinn is an anarchist or similar I believe.

No. Levin is a partisan hack, not an intellectual; I'd rate his book a step above Sean Hannity's books.

I read Buckley's God and Man at Yale right after Levin's book. It was like reading Atlas Shrugged after Cat and the Hat.

I will have to read Mark Levin before I can give you a good "equal" because I don't really know what themes or approaches he writes about.

I would recommend the author Chris Hedges if you want some truly gifted writing on what I Would consider a more leftist look at subjects such as War and religious fundamentalism in the U.S.
