First, what do tariffs have to do with fixing the public debt, especially if they drive us into recession, which will reduce tax receipts and increase costs? The tariffs are effectively a huge tax increase with the incidence thereof place largely on those that can least afford. It is a regressive tax, inflationary and is/will slow the economy to a recession. They are dumb!

He could have simultaneously held talks with the EU and other large trading partners to get a sense of what the atmosphere is to address trade issues before resorting to the nuclear option. Good negotiators know how to conduct these kind of talks and use the obvious leverage in a calculated manner; if one has to resort to threats, one has already failed at negotiation.
