The nation's top infectious diseases doctor Anthony Fauci on Thursday clashed with Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) over the need for people to continue wearing masks once they've already been infected with or vaccinated against COVID-19.

"You're telling everyone to wear a mask," Paul said. "If we're not spreading the infection, isn't it just theater? You have the vaccine and you're wearing two masks, isn't that theater?"

"Here we go again with the theater," an exasperated Fauci responded. "Let's get down to the facts."

Paul, who was infected with COVID-19 at the beginning of the pandemic last March, has said he is immune to future infection. As a result, he refuses to wear a mask in the Capitol and has declared he does not need to be vaccinated.

This guy is an M.D. & his stand is right-wing silliness.

Rand Paul (Q-KY) is not even fit to lick Dr. Fauci's boots.

People are looking for a light switch transition, but it doesn't always work that way. What we don't have hard data on is the transmission rates from vaccinated people who have COVID 19.

I heard that soon after being diagnosed with Covid-19 right-libertarian Rand went for a swim in the pool at the elitist gym.

Paul supposedly has an MD. But I am wondering why at this point he is not getting his license yanked. The guy is a danger to public health. If he wants to spout unscientific right wing nonsense, he should not be doing it with the authority of a licensed professional. The medical profession would be wise to distance itself from this clown as far as possible.

Perhaps we should start a poll. Which Senator is the biggest asshole? Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Ron Johnson, Mitch McConnell? Have I forgotten anyone?

Paul is the perfect example of an ideologue. His right-libertarian mind cannot wrap itself around the idea of government mandates during a pandemic.

Well if you broadened it to include any congressman, I would have said that Devin Nunes should definitely be on the list.

Is it any wonder that the armpit of America (Kentucky) consistently elects people like Paul and McConnell?
As of Feb 16, 2021 a study compared all 50 states across 18 metrics that examined the key factors of a well-educated population: educational attainment, school quality and achievement gaps between genders and races.
Kentucky placed 45th out of 50 states.

At least they weren't last as that title goes to good old West Virginia.

Good job Paul and McConnell.

Paul is a glaring example of the harm that the right-wing is doing to this country. All they want is power.

It is rather ridiculous to simultaneously assert that folks should (must?) be vaccinated, yet the (nearly full?) “immunity” conferred by being vaccinated (or having recovered from confirmed COVID-19 infection) means that one must still wear a mask and remain “socially distanced” (forever?).

Did you watch the exchange he had with Doctor Pinocchio? Paul specifically asked why Pinocchio continues to parade around wearing two masks after already getting the vaccine and being immune, and Pinocchio didn't give a straight answer.

It is all political theater after people are immune. No other logical explanation, other than to quell the mask hysteria loons who believe that masks are the best way to signal one's submission to the group liberal think.

No just at least until herd immunity.

The thing is the vaccine's efficacy in preventing infection still isn't conclusive; what we understand much better is its efficacy at preventing serious illness. So while there are still large amounts of unvaccinated people out there, the vaccine only prevents the inoculated from getting really sick. As the number of vaccinated increase, the need for social distancing and mask usage should wane, so I don't think "forever" is in that timeline.

Nobody is saying that. It's probable that the vaccination reduces transmission, but until we achieve optimal vaccination levels then the precautionary principle says you continue to protect the unvaccinated until then.

OK, but aren’t those already immune part of herd immunity? The COVID -19 vaccination (political?) “deal” seems to be you should get vaccinated so that you may be treated exactly as if you were not yet vaccinated. That, of course, is not the case for other vaccines - those that have been vaccinated are treated differently than those who have not been vaccinated.

That (bolded above) makes no sense and is not the case for any other vaccine.

Measles vaccines are 97% effective. So if you've been vaccinated against measles and are exposed to a lot of people who aren't, you have a 3% chance of getting measles.

The idea is that a large group of people with a 3% chance of getting infected will not allow the disease to spread, due to simple mathematics. Doesn't change the fact that each person has a 3% chance of being infected on contact.

The QAnon chick in there, whats her name. I just know her as the QAnon chick.

And who does Rand P think he is. His base sounds like a bunch of babies. Give me a reward? Geez, grow up!

Shouldn’t we know by now if the COVID-19 vaccination reduces (or eliminates?) transmission enough to allow the vaccinated to no longer wear masks? What, exactly, is the “optimal vaccination level” and who declared that to be so?

The vaccines are not 100% effective, and there's no herd immunity until a lot of people (around 80%) are vaccinated or have recovered from infections. Until there is very little of the virus floating around, the virus can still spread faster than the vaccine can stop it, including through people who are "immune."
