A massive explosion in the center of Donetsk on Friday evening was the work of a car bomb that detonated outside the government headquarters, the authorities in the breakaway region in eastern Ukraine have said.

The targeted vehicle is said to be that of one of the separatist leaders which would indicate that the attack was an assassination attempt by Ukrainian forces.

The possibility exists, of course, that the "attack" was actually orchestrated by Russians as a pretext to claim Ukrainian hostilities against Russia.

If everyone is smart about this they'll chalk it up as, "a little excitement but no big deal". If they aren't smart...well, I guess we'll just wait and see.

Of course Russia is generating a pretext. The alternatives would be either (1) packing up and going home, losing major domestic face, (2) attacking and outright admitting he's just plain taking it.

I'd expect generation of a pretext even if it had not been our reported intelligence assessment.

Putin is trying to paint himself as some kind of a victim. Being diplomatically checked by a resurgent NATO wasn't enough, so he needs to manufacture a stronger casus belli.

Most of the world, especially our allies, are relieved to say the least, that we have a competent team in place to deal with Moscow’s aggrandizement.


Does anyone doubt for a minute that Putin would be riding bareback down the streets of Kiev on a white stallion now if the other guy was still president?

It is actually kind of shocking Putin didn't do this then while he had the chance. Trump would be out there saying: "No problem. I know better than our deep state intelligence agencies. President Putin has assured me they are not going to attack. "

Looks like Putin’s false flag scenario has begun. The pretext has become clear. Putin will try to entice the Ukrainian army to attack the “breakaway” regions, at which time he will declare them the aggressor and launch his own attack in order to “protect Russian citizens”. So transparent.

Maybe. The lead up to all of this has been so entirely one sided that it's unlikely anyone would believe such a claim.

If Putin does go into Donetsk, especially based on something like this, he isn't going to have much support outside of China and Iran, maybe.

Where was the ‘support’ going to come from other than those countries?

Maybe. It will certainly stop an UN Security Council condemnations but Russia is already a permanent member so that wasn't going to happen anyway. China might well hop on board the Russia train just to give the middle finger to Biden and the EU but they also know that they are an economic power that the rest of the world can't live without.
