There was an article on BBC about this: BBC News - Why are Buddhist monks attacking Muslims?

Of all the moral precepts instilled in Buddhist monks the promise not to kill comes first, and the principle of non-violence is arguably more central to Buddhism than any other major religion. So why have monks been using hate speech against Muslims and joining mobs that have left dozens dead?
This is happening in two countries separated by well over 1,000 miles of Indian Ocean - Burma and Sri Lanka. It is puzzling because neither country is facing an Islamist militant threat. Muslims in both places are a generally peaceable and small minority
Christian crusaders, Islamist militants, or the leaders of "freedom-loving nations", all justify what they see as necessary violence in the name of a higher good. Buddhist rulers and monks have been no exception
No Religion is peaceful.

Yeah. I know. It's just preconception that hindu's and buddhists are peaceful people or that hinduism or buddhism are religions that teach peace. No sir, they can be tools for manipulation and violence just like all the rest.

I often said that there is no greater religion of enslavement and backwardness than Hinduism. The caste system which is an integral part of hinduism has been used to enslave an entire subcontinent for about 7000 years now or so.

yeah, but if an atheist kills then they do it for their own selfish reasons and cannot excuse their actions with god which makes them completely immoral because how do they know who god wants to kill? Bet you didn't think about that one.

By which methods do their religion enslaves its people compared to these more common over here?

The caste system. I told you. There has never been, in the history of mankind, a greater ideological prison and a more durable one. We here think that karma is a good thing or... you know, do good and you shall receive good and do bad and you shall receive bad. It's actually 1 out of a pillar of 4 notions which underline the oppressive nature of hinduism, working together in perfect harmony. If not for westernization, even today the caste system would be as powerful as it was hundred of years ago.

No Religion is peaceful.
Yesterday a guest told me when the "Murdering Budhist" concept seemed like an oxymoron at first. I was amazed by the videos in Youtube that did confirm it though.

I did not find any links in DP about this. So I opened one up.

So, Mr. Meditating-for-peace-n-compassion do kill too.

A question to all viewing this thread: Who could do something about this?

China? It has its share of Muslims there. They are nearer also.

India? Same advantages like China but slightly less powerful. For this it could make up by relating to people in Indochina by race.

USA? Up for another one?

Japan or South Korea? I read somewhere that the people living in the region do fear the armies of these countries. Perhaps they could respect their imposed order also.

Also these are Budhists not Hinduists. I found the caste system for Hinduists also, but what of Budhists?

Hinduism, like all religions, is good when it's not in any form of government.

Yes, I was talking about hindus atm. What details would you like to know? They have a caste system. It's bad because it keeps people enslaved to their position, and it's hereditary. Goes great if you're at the top, sucks for the rest.

There is no caste system for buddhism as far as I am aware, that goes for both kinds of buddhism. But they are just as violent.
There were countless wars between buddhists and shinto's in japan for instance.
Confucianists and buddhists.
Taoists and buddhists...

etc. In terms of religious wars, east asia has seen it's fair share even as recent as the last century.

Hinduism, like Islam, has a built-in form of government and socio-political norms.

So? It's still a religion when not in governance. Neither Hindus nor Muslims believe in negative consequences for living under secular governments.

Well sure, if you bring those religions into the "enlightenment" and westernize+secularize the countries they live in, nobody in their right mind will be stupid enough to go against the benefits provided by this process. The improvements would be so superior that everybody would welcome them. Well... not everybody.

Many in Muslim world want sharia as law of the land – Pew Forum survey | FaithWorld

But it doesn't change the fact that they are religions with socio-political norms built in them.

So it is always a religion. It's just that sensible countries won't accept the politics of said religion to interfere. Hence, secularism. But it's much harder to move towards secularism when the religion itself demands it governs than when there is no such demand. Hence, why secularism became a thing in European countries, Christian countries, not in other parts of the world.

All religion advocates violence if it is for their own selfish sake, Buddhism as we have seen here, Christianity and the crusades, Islam and Jihad and Judaism and Milkhemet Mitzvah. Religion is a naturally expansionist, imperialist force which seeks to control the lives and behaviour of those who participate in it.

In the article it states how in Sri Lanka and Burma/Myanmar in particular this activity is present.

No Religion is peaceful.
Are you really trying to tell us that it isn't the philosophy and doctrine that promotes the peace? We can't always control how people act, but we can certainly start with the correct philosophy, can't we? Like promoting peace would be much different religious writings that promote violence. People break their principles all the time, and not just religious ones.

Or does that just mean the atheist murderer is more honest about the motivations and is therefore better? :D

Are you telling me that when i use god as my justification for murder i am really projecting my own desires onto an imaginary being to validate my murderous intent through a societal construct to excuse my immoral and illegal activity? I am pretty sure god doesn't like that because I know god and he doesn't like what i don't like which makes me god. Oh goody I am god, beware the powers i will wield to turn you all into pastel ponies.

Better this way than running into one on the street.
