From the Daily Mail (don't shoot the messenger):

President Donald Trump has told his Cabinet and inner circle that Elon Musk is stepping back from his government role.

The Tesla and Space X founder will soon be returning to the business world, Politico reported, in a move that rattled the stock market and stunned Washington.

Musk's designation as a special government employee meant he was scheduled to step down in May but he's now leaving early in a cloud of controversy.

I didn't expect this. Did anybody?

FOX says otherwise. I think people are taking his announcing of some nebulous unknown future date of departure as him having departed.

Elon Musk will exit his role on the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) on schedule later this spring, once "his incredible work at DOGE is complete," the White House confirmed Wednesday.
"This ‘scoop’ is garbage," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt posted to X Wednesday. "Elon Musk and President Trump have both *publicly* stated that Elon will depart from public service as a special government employee when his incredible work at DOGE is complete."

I think Musk needs to return to minding his own businesses. It's also clear he really isn't a political positive beyond the base so I am not surprised but I am skeptical he really butts out.

Where is the link to the story?

Query whether the only reason the right-lean judge lost in WI is because Musk's attempt to buy the election drove up voter turnout on the left.

Further, as I have said:

The idea that the world's richest man, already a meglomaniac, dropped 300 million on an election and promises to drop more just so that he could become the second most powerful person in the country without having even won an election just because the glowing golden goodness of his heart compelled him to volunteer to "fight fraud" and "waste" is simply too stupid to consider.
Anyone who actually believes it should be institutionalized. Then again, I don't think anyone does believe it.
What he's doing is obvious. His first concern were his companies. So he 'shut down'/fired/punished any effort and anyone involved in those efforts to investigate his companies, who took part in any action or rulemaking he thinks affects his companies negatively. He's steered additional contracts towards his companies. And he's got the remnants of raped agencies starting investigations into his companies' rivals. Exactly what you would expect from a sociopath billionaire.
That's him fed. But then there's the future. Unless Trump succeeds in his desire for no more elections - or at least no more real elections where people have a choice - he needs things so badly restructured and damaged that the Democrats can't fix it later, or at least in his lifetime. There comes in the rest of the assault on the executive agency apparatus, which has been absolutely essential to America getting to where it was. We tried laissez fair and we saw that it ****ed over everyone except the very very richest.
So he's bringing that back. Wipe out federal power so as to create a power vacuum, and billoinaires like him can step in to fill that vacuum, not having to worry about meaningful oversight absent another period of social catastrophe. Depression and civil unrest, etc. A good 15-30 years of power.
I would be surprised if he didn't have in mind a shift from republican democracy to a state fully and openly led by merchant princes.
So, query whether he considers himself to have already done enough of the damage, sees the post-WI writing on the wall, and decided to get the hell out of the public sector before his companies remove him as CEO.

After all, he did quash investigations into his companies and entire chunks of agencies conducting them. He did pressure investigations into his rivals. He did **** up all sorts of agencies that are of the type to regulate the activities he engages in, and MAGA toadies are still running those agencies. So....

Or query whether it's all bullshit.
The indirectly-linked to article in the OP was: https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2025/04/02/trump-musk-leaving-political-liability-00265784

"Anonymous Trump sources say that Trump said...." isn't exactly compelling.

Special government employees are permitted to work for the federal government for "no more than 130 days in a 365- day period," according to data from the Office of Government Ethics. Musk's 130-day timeframe, beginning on Inauguration Day, runs dry May 30.

more crazy liberal hate news circulating today I see ....... Musk was never going to be around for years

FYI, your thread has no link to a news story.

Same shit different day.
Even if he does "step down" or however they are going to frame it, I would not be surprised if he still pulls strings from behind the scenes. 💰 💰

I will believe it when I see it. I think it's part of Trump's fascist agenda to use Elon Musk to piss all over the Constitution and destroy our Republic.

The idea that anyone with an ego almost as big as Trumps own can survive long in Trumps orbit when competing for headlines is 'interesting'. The chance of Musk being tossed aside in a fit of Trumpian anger is very real, but I think Trump rather likes Musks money, so Musk has plenty of the only thing that Trump seems to sometimes stop and consider before he acts. Right now, I am sure Trump is thinking that the public anger at Musk is all musk's fault and has nothing to do with Trumps own failings and agenda. So it is complicated for Trump!! What I believe though is that Trump is probably still just smart enough to realise that having Musk doing a lot of his dirty work is deflecting some of the public anger onto Musk rather than having Trump himself being seen as accountable. Meaning that Trump still sees Musk as useful for now, and probably won't sack him until Musk has done the majority of the harm he wants DOGE to do.

That's a shock.

I've been a government watcher for 40 years and I did NOT see this coming.

My gut says it was not voluntary. I think the Nazi salute which is in widespread publication was a tipping point.

No problem. He did what he was hired to do: He set up DOGE.

They can continue without him.

I posted that his role would likely be greatly reduced to floor level yesterday on a different thread. It’s because he cost the republicans a ton of votes in Wisconsin yesterday. And I bet that the fact that Tesla sales and stock prices are bottoming out also played a role.
