Dogs or Cats?

Which would you rather have as a pet, a dog or a cat?

I've always preferred cats. They're quieter than dogs, lower maintenance, better conversationalists, and in my experience they are just as affectionate. I've probably had about 16 cats altogether. They're all gone now, but I loved them dearly.

We had cats when I was a kid. The chore of cleaning the litter box soured me on cats. Don’t have a problem walking the dog to take care of functions. I like cats alright, just prefer dogs at this point in my life.
Currently have a small petting zoo over here 😂

Currently have 3 dogs, 1 cat and 4 foster/rescue kittens (that will be adopted out once they are spayed/neutered)

They are definitely very different but I love them all.

(Additionally 1 hermit crab and 1 parakeet)

I joke to my husband he’s going to come home and find mini goats, mini cows and chickens. He responds “I wouldn’t be in the least surprised” 😂😂😂
Where do you keep the crab?

I saw it some time ago.

I would never say cat's are not smart.

But to me fish make better pets. In my aquarium there is a Khuli Loach I have had for over five years! I NEVER stops swimming. There is absolutely NO relationship, the Loach has no idea I even exist. My kind of pet.

I would love to have an ant farm

I have 3 (originally 4) black lined loaches that are a tad over 26 years old - I bought them in June of 1999. I wouldn't believe their age if they weren't mine, lol. The lifespan is supposed to be something like 5-10 years. They spend most of their time under a log. Other than these, the oldest fish I had was an 11 year old red tailed shark.

To all those who voted for dog, let me remind you.................

Dogs have owners, cats have slaves.
Good point. My belief is somewhat related to it. Dogs are stereotypical democrats, friendly to all: labor issues — affirmative pant-pant; womens’s issues — pant-pant, environmental issues — pant-pant. Cats on the other hand, are stereotypical republicans. Their affect seems to be, “I have money, I will pay attention to you only if I want to. On my terms.”

Yeesh.

I've come to appreciate cats more later in life, but if pressed (like now) I will always choose dogs.

You can NOT pick both. That would take away all the fun and the anticipated heated debates about...................

Which you would rather have as a pet, Dogs or Cats.

Give your reasons.

I like both dogs and cats. I think dogs are probably better if you have kids because dogs and children like to play, whereas cats just want the freedom to do their own thing. As an aging single guy, though, arrogant kitties doin' their own thing are totally up my alley. I wouldn't have to walk them and take them out to poop on a schedule, though having an animal that shits outside the house is probably a plus.

I'm saying both, I have one of each at the moment and love them both. They both have their value as part of my family. 🩵

Familiar with angels?

I have managed to breed them but no matter what they never live very long. Two to three years.

I did have angels, and they never lived much longer that 3 years for me, either. They would lay eggs, but would eat them every single time, but it was in a mixed fish tank. One of my favorites are rams, but the same thing - short lived and egg eaters, lol. A ram was the only fish I've ever had bite me when it had laid eggs and I was cleaning the gravel. The only fish I had any luck with breeding, other than platys & swordtails, were croaking gouramis (one of my favorite fish), and rasboras. Sparkling gouramis would breed but they were terrible egg eaters. I would put a floating plastic strawberry basket in the tank, to try to keep the eggs in and the fish out, and those damn little fish would jump into the basket every time.

You didn't have egg traps? When I was breeding you could buy a rectangular plastic box in two pieces, place the egg layer in the top section. Th eggs drop to the bottom section or float above the box (depending on the species) keeping them separate. It was like breeding frogs for bait and food but still a though hawl as 100,000,000 eggs gets you maybe a dozen frogs.

I have to say I had never heard of an egg trap. And I also have to say I was never prepared for any breeding and none of it happened by my doing, other than giving them good conditions. The croaking gouramis were a joy to watch though. Blowing their bubble nest, and they never once ate an egg, that I saw.

Then I cannot vote/choose. We have had cats for decades, BUT we also have had and have dearly-loved granddogs.

Both animals give so much to their human companions...

Uh uhh, all HOUSECATS are libertarians.
They're convinced of their fierce independence while dependent on a system they don't appreciate or understand.
But despite that, cats are more fun than watching TV, and oftentimes better conversationalists than some hoomin beans.

And in my entire life I've never had a cat that acted like an asshole, not ever.
In fact, every veterinarian I've ever taken my cats to has been amazed at how sweet and affectionate my cats are.
Of course, our dogs too but that's almost automatic unless the dog is neurotic, none of our dogs were ever neurotic.

But again, it's the cats that earn the praise because our cats have always been sweetie pies, every one of them.
Fiona will introduce herself to strangers after they've been in the house for more than three minutes, she will just sidle up to them and say hello.

Same with Boopers but Boopers is named that because....SHE BOOPS.
She boops everyone and every thing. She is a booperr.
She is also a jumper and a licker, doesn't matter who you are.

But first, she has to boop you.

Also, strangely enough, Miss Fiona seems to be in love with my arm.
I get groomed about once or twice a day.
Must be the salt, or maybe she just thinks I am her kitten and my hairy arms need regular grooming.

She doesn't groom anyone else, just my hairy arm.
