2) Having to do Things whether you Like it or Not
Any psychologist would tell you that a major factor in being happy as a human being is doing something you love. For example, people who do a job they love are happier and have a much lower chance of being depressed than those who do a job they do not like.
A recent study by economists at the University of Warwick said that people who work in a job they like are 12% more productive than those who do a job they do not like.
For most Jehovah’s Witnesses, even if they might never admit it, most of them hate to preach. And frankly, that’s why their organization requires that each member reports the number of hours they engaged in the “preaching work” or “ministry” for that month. This is not only to know how many hours were spent in such ministry but who did those hours by putting their name on that little report slip.
Because of this, the individual knows that he has to preach if he doesn’t want to be labeled as inactive.
Preaching affects some Jehovah’s Witnesses psychologically and physiologically.
If you add to that the other things they do not like to do such as, going to meetings every week, studying the Watchtower publications every week, doing “talks” at the Kingdom Hall on a regular basis, commenting/participating during the meeting as often as possible, etc. that’s a lot of obligations that the average Jehovah’s Witness has to fill all year long.
All of this can generate a constant unhappy feeling, anguish, and melancholy that one has to live with, and it could go as far as chronic depression.
3) Everything is Forbidden
It would be easier to list the things that are allowed than the things that are not allowed in Jehovah’s Witnesses world.Virtually all that is trivial for people in general, is forbidden to Jehovah’s Witnesses
Here are just a few:
· They are not allowed to celebrate any holiday
· They are not allowed to date without the intention to marry
· Men are not allowed to wear a beard if they want to have any type of privilege in the religion
· Women are not supposed to wear dresses or skirts above the knee
· It is strongly frowned upon to work towards a career or to indulge in a hobby
· They are not allowed to attend religious events other than their own
· They are not supposed to be friends with people who are not Jehovah’s Witnesses
They are not supposed to marry someone who is not a Jehovah’s Witness
· They can’t celebrate birthdays
· They can’t have a blood transfusion
· They are not allowed to have sex unless they are married
· They can’t do everything they want sexually even with their spouse
· They can’t masturbate
· They are not supposed to watch movies that are rated R
The life of the Jehovah’s Witnesses is guided by those forbidden things and more. If a Jehovah’s Witness were to break any of the rules they could be spoken to by an elder (the equivalent of a pastor) of the congregation for the least important ones and could be “disfellowshipped” (excommunicated) if they broke one of the most important ones.
4) Sexual Frustration
Since Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t have the right to experience their sexuality normally like everyone else, their sexual frustration is widespread in the religion.Because of this, we observe two real facts among Jehovah’s Witnesses.
1) Addiction to pornography beyond the normal percentage.
2) Very early marriages and often times loveless, because it is the only way to have sex.
These two facts lead to an avalanche of problems in the form of uneasiness, discomfort, depression, and other physiological and psychological problems.
At times ex-Jehovah’s Witnesses have admitted that they had some issues with addiction to pornography due to their sexual frustration as young men in this cult.
5) Never doing Enough for the Organization
When it comes to this area the problem is that the individual has been made to believe that the organization equal Jehovah. So when Jehovah’s Witnesses spend their time, energy, and resources for the Watchtower organization they are convinced that they are doing this for Jehovah God.Because the organization leadership knows that this is the case, they relentlessly ask more of the rank and file in the name of Jehovah, and they are doing it so well that the individual pretty much constantly feels that he doesn’t do enough for Jehovah.
If you are a Jehovah’s Witness, I am sure you have felt this way plenty of times and you may be feeling this right now still.
The brainwashing of the need to do more all the time is spread through meetings, publications, public talks (speeches), assemblies and videos.
