No. The time to shoot down a “Chinese balloon” (or other unauthorized aircraft) is before it’s eventually leaving US airspace after having completed its (spy?) mission.

A foreign craft flying into the US's airspace without permission........ not sure why you need a certain "pay grade" to take a stab at that one.
 
I don't normally play the "I'm sure our government knew what it was doing the whole time" card, but I think a situation involving an incredibly slow moving object allowed our national security apparatus the time it needed to make the right call.

This may well have been intentional. Several days to decode live communications to/from a foreign military asset under our watchful eye? Might be appealing.

They should have waited until it was over the ocean or a completely unpopulated area.

Apparently you missed @Cardinal's insistence that the whole thing was stupid because it was just a balloon. Now it sounds like he agrees it should've been shot down. But, why? It was just a balloon.

Some balloon experts can tell that they don‘t contain any WMD capability long before they enter US airspace. ;)
 
Yes and over the Atlantic was the right place to do. The DoD advised POTUS that it wasn't a security risk (or that the security risk didn't warrant the possibility of it landing on someone's head)and I take that assessment at face value.
 
Yes, whoever actually made the decision probably made the right call.

Agreed.

That said, in my feature film treatment of this event, I am including a subplot about how the balloon was loaded with chipped COVID spores by Dark Bill Gates. In the movie, I intend to cast William Dafoe in the role.
