Do adults have an absolute right to do what they want with their own bodies?

Which of these things should adults be legally allowed to do with their own bodies?

Didnt disparage them all...quoted stats and empathized if they were forced to give birth if denied choice.
This would be more convincing if you hadn’t immediately had a problem with my comment that I think was a fair one. I truly don’t care what you think of pro life parents. It doesn’t surprise me. I happen to know for a fact that there are good ones.

By saying it’s acting without consent you’re making a moral judgment against it. It’s sad you see unborn babies as being such bad things. They’re entirely blameless, though.
there is no “they” until a living baby is born.

One feels sorry for their children. Imagine being raised by a person who sees you as a parasite.

Yeah, I’m sure all pro life parents are bad.
No one claimed that.

I understand your concerns about exploitation, but otherwise, how would that work - sell sex yes, buy sex no?
It would work by not arresting those that sell sex but arresting the men attempting to buy it. I believe that is what they do in many European countries now.

Er so do I and your self-righteous defense isnt really playing well.

Because I'm pretty sure almost everyone knows that.

I was actually trying to defend pro choicers. Good grief, what a mistake that’s been.

Stop lying. The posts are still there. I said your position on this topic doesn’t dictate whether you’re a good parent or not and you flat ****ing disagreed with me and said it was, in fact, a good indicator.

Here it is again:

"Solid indication tho.
There's even some confirmation in the data showing that crime rates went down after RvW was decided. But it is well known that socio-economically challenged families are at higher risk of juvenile delinquency, abuse, and criminal development. And ~75% of all abortions are for financial reasons. 🤷 So it's not a stretch to conclude impacts on parenting, even if not intentional."

Because the struggle to parent when the mother/couple were aware of the risks and were denied the opportunity (pre-Roe) led to more difficult parenting, more neglect, more difficulties parenting.

So it is a good indicator of a higher risk in poor parenting if pro-life restrictions prevail.

I get exactly why you disagreed with my comment.

Doesn't seem fair to me. If it's legal to be sold, it should be legal to buy it.

No need for the self-righteous outrage then, right?
I made a comment that your beliefs on abortion do not dictate whether you’re a good parent or not so if you disagree with that, your belief is that someone’s belief on abortion does dictate whether they’re a good parent or not. Personally I think that’s absolutely ridiculous but not particularly surprising. Now, whether self righteous outrage is warranted would largely depend on how much someone actually cares about your own “self righteous” judgment and that would be up to each individual.

You seem to have difficulty with basic vocabulary. "Do" and "dont" are pretty definite terms. I was not, and thus did not use definite terms...and then clearly explained my view based on what studies have shown.

  • Get an abortion at 8 weeks, because they do not want a child I don't like it, but they have the right. I would say they should have thought about that shit before they had sex
  • Buy sex from a prostitute Yes. It's their body
  • Be a prostitute See above
  • Use marijuana See above
  • Use meth or fentanyl No. that's just stupid to drug your damn self to death
  • Get sex-change surgeries Yes Better that than claiming to be other sex when you're not
  • Commit assisted suicide with no terminal illness, with a willing doctor No. Anyone who helps an otherwise healthy person to die has committed murder
  • Refuse to get the MMR vaccine, because they falsely believe it will cause autism Yes. Anyone should have the right to refuse a vaccine.
  • Be a surrogate mother in exchange for money Yes, It's their body
  • Refuse mental health help, if they are clearly disturbed Yes, but we as society should be prepared for the consequences.

I'm honestly surprised at how libertarian the poll results are, especially for the ones that I thought would be more controversial. It seems a majority of respondents support assisted suicide even without a terminal illness, and a near-majority support letting people use meth/fentanyl...views that seem genuinely extreme and shocking to me. I also thought buying sex and paid surrogacy would be a lot more controversial, but I'm in the very small minority there. I realize that DP isn't the general electorate, but it's a good reminder to me that there's a whole world of bodily-autonomy views that are well to the left of where I'm at.

The four poll options that I support are the ones where there's the most consensus, at least on this forum: Adults should be allowed to have abortions, sell sex, use marijuana, and get sex change surgeries.

I would say yes to everything but the right to refuse mental health...and then only if they represent a threat to themselves or others.

At the same time, I would also suggest that society should have no obligation to pay for any of their choices...and that includes insurance companies. And if we are extending the choice to women to kill babies, then we should also allow men to abort their responsibility to pay for them.

Doesn't seem fair to me. If it's legal to be sold, it should be legal to buy it.

The general idea in Europe is that you are trying to protect sex workers. Trafficking and pimping exists and that is what is being targeted in our laws; as well as to get sex workers off the street.
We have seen a rise in more women selling sex from the safety of a communal rented flat (nobody will live there - it's just used for sex) or some hotels specialise in charging for a room by the hour. Prostitutes still get arrested if the police can prove that more than one person is selling sex from the property though.

I will ask, did you mean for the MMR one to be about the adult refusing for them or the adult refusing for a child? I took it as for them, their own body, since that was the theme that I took from the thread, despite the autism reference, but it does seem like many others took it as refusing for their child.

While I do think they should be able to refuse vaccines for their children, I also support laws that would keep children whose parents simply refuse vaccines, especially for the reason you gave, out of public schools. But adults should be able to refuse for themselves (I've expanded on this already).

I get that. It just seems to me that targeting pimps and traffickers is the way to go, because that's where a lot of the danger and exploitation lies for the women (or male prostitutes). It seems unfair to me to target people buying something that is legally sold. 🤷‍♀️

Good point. It's how we ended up with Trumpism, people with mental health problems refusing to get help.

I'd say the numbers of pimps and traffickers arrested is far higher and police tend to focus more on them anyway. 301 people were arrested in 2022 across England and Wales for soliciting sex.

By contrast, a lot of work has gone into dismantling sex trafficking networks between Bulgaria and the UK / Spain and the UK / Albania and the UK etc.

Yes, unless theyre a danger to others.
Like not getting vaccinated against Covid at the beginning of the pandemic once good vaccines became available.
