If he gets to become dictator, that is:

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump said Thursday one of the first things he will do when elected to the White House will be to mandate the death penalty for anyone who kills a police officer.

“One of the first things I’d do in terms of executive order, if I win, will be to sign strong, strong statement that would go out to the country, out to the world, anybody killing policeman police woman, police officer, anybody killing police officer, the death penalty is going to happen,” he said.

“We can’t let this go,” he added, speaking to a New Hampshire crowd alongside the New England Police Benevolent Association, who had voted to endorse the former reality TV star’s bid for the Presidency.

“I want to let you know, the police and law enforcement in this country, I will never ever let them down,” he said.

“The job they do and the job all you in this room do is second to none, and everyone in our country knows that.”

Who but a dictator could mandate such a thing, after all?

I don't think Trump knows how executive orders work.

It's his tendency to make statements like that which makes me doubt he will be the Republican nominee, in the end. Congress could make a law authorizing the death penalty for the murder of various federal officers--in fact federal laws like that probably already exist. But the President has no authority to make laws. And nothing in the Constitution would authorize Congress to make laws about local police. Murder laws are mostly state laws--it is up to each state to decide how to penalize murders, including the murder of police officers. Many states already make the death penalty available for the murder of a cop.

I don't think Trump knows how a functioning human brain works, never having possessed one.

That does not make him less dangerous.

I disagree with the death penalty... so I disagree with Trump. I feel like he's kind of trying to insight some kind of mob rule...

How do you feel about the president mandating punishment for any crime?

Ever lived with an Alzheimer patient or someone who's brain isn't fully functioning? It can be quite dangerous and not just to the individual.

I think punishments for crimes are regulated by the states right? We have too many things stomping all over states rights.... I think a President could possibly have the power to mandate military law punishments/International crime/Prisoners of war/etc....people that are not a U.S. citizens though.

Some days I think he's just pandering to his core and doesn't believe half of what he says. Other days I'm not so sure.

fwiw yes. And they can be dangerous to not only themselves but every one around them.

So he wants to issue an Executive Order to make it mandatory that anyone who kills a police officer gets the death penalty, in a room here in NH with the New England PBA.

I'm missing the crisis here.

He says outrageous things in order to stay in the media spotlight. It saves him millions of dollars he would otherwise have to spend on the campaign. I'm not sure Trump cares much about the subjects he spouts off about but I do think he cares about money. People, especially the media, are fascinated by his anti political campaign. Will he win? Who knows?

To be honest, I'm a little iffy on the boundaries of executive orders. I'd love to say that Trump would be operating outside his authority in "mandating" the death sentence for a particular crime, but I don't actually know that.

Exactly.
Yet Trump seems to think that he, as (heaven forbid!) POTUS could dictate punishment for crimes.

That boundary is a concrete wall. It is state law and local district attorneys and judges that determine sentences. The president doesn't even the authority to tell a federal judge what he should do. He can ask but certainly not order. This is just Trump doing what he does to say in the news.

So executive orders just apply to Federal law? I'm baffled because Schoolhouse Rock was quite clear that congress creates laws.

In short the police are special people who are above the law and you can't defend yourself against if they attack you for no reason. if they attack you then you have to let yourself die.

No, I am not making a joke in any capacity.

That is the gist to Trump's message, which is just another imbecilic reason to not vote for him.

It almost sounds like he wants to do away with due process of law for people who go against the police as well.

This clown promises to do things if elected that the President of the United States does not have the power to do..............

And folks believe him...............Me thinks those who believe must have failed HS American History......or are just plain stupid

I don't think Trump knows how executive orders work.

I'm sure he does. He just knows that such things gain votes. We have such a stupid voting population that love to hear various notions left, or right. Just consider all the idiots we put in office all the time.

The left is even worse with such pandering fallacies.

It's simply part of the politics as normal. If you are going to criticize one person or one side, please consider the other side and don't be hypocritical.

I guess you don't read or remember many of my posts. I routinely criticize the left, the right and my fellow libertarians.
