(CNN)The Department of Homeland Security has temporarily suspended the use of horse patrol in the Del Rio, Texas, sector, a Homeland Security official told reporters Thursday.
An investigation was launched after video of Border Patrol agents on horse patrol aggressively confronting migrants surfaced earlier this week. Several top administration officials as well as congressional Democrats have expressed outrage over the images.

The amount of stupid in this decision is mind boggling.

Horse patrols are practical, safe and necessary in areas of rugged terrain. Using horses to control pedestrian populations in times of civil disorder is a common tactic and has been used for more than a century including in urban areas. In this case you have alarmist morons in congress calling for the termination of border patrol officers that were merely doing their job. If we allow idiots like that to influence law enforcement decisions then we may as well not have law enforcement....

...hey! Maybe that's part of the plan. If we're going to defund police then we may as well defund border patrol too.

Maybe the officers should have treated the people with respect not hate and they wouldn't have gotten suspended.

It's their own fault.

  • Horse Patrol: The Horse Patrol Program is comprised of skilled horse riders, trainers, and instructors. Horse Patrol Agents ride in challenging terrain, environmentally protected, and privately owned sensitive geographic locations. The Horse Patrol are the most viable, and, in some cases, the only option for the U.S. Border Patrol to enter into regions inaccessible by any other means of patrol, such as 4x4 vehicles or All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs). Without the Horse Patrol, these areas would remain unpatrolled and susceptible to transnational criminal activity.
I guess I just assumed the program was bigger than just the few meanies in this incident.

I saw (on FOX, of course) the video of those morons with their long faces almost weeping.

The poor dears.

I heard that the officers have been put on desk duty.

Disgusting.

See all those white areas in the satellite view of the area they are patrolling, those are roads... It's a FLOOD plain, not exactly "rugged terrain"...

The optics were pretty bad; especially with people being assailed with cords of some kind. That said, I don't think it should mean an overall suspension of horse patrols if they help officers perform their duties.

A reporter on the scene claims she witnessed it, and in fairness it appears to be using reins in a menacing way, which to your point is a bit different than people being whipped. It's bad optics, but optics none the less if it wasn't some widespread incident. The interesting thing with the border debacle is there's no real way of winning, because one side is unhappy people are being deported and the other is unhappy because people are coming in droves despite the ongoing deportations.

Maybe if the "people" had respect for the officers the officers would not have responded the way they did. Respect goes both ways.

Do you know how many of the "migrants" who are seeking asylum are capable of caring for themselves? That is they will need no social or welfare assistance.
The US does not have an unlimited supply of money to assist everyone.

15,000 illegal aliens bum rushing the border. The officers are doing the best they can after the idiot Biden put the border open notice out!
Getting rid of the horses just make it easier to illegally cross our border which is what Biden wants.

The 9ff8cets are supposed to be professionals, trained to work with desperate people. They should act professionally.

The migrants are not professionals, they are just desperate people. There is no such expectation of them.

The officers are supposed to be trained and need to treat human beings with respect.
