Horse patrols are practical, safe and necessary in areas of rugged terrain. Using horses to control pedestrian populations in times of civil disorder is a common tactic and has been used for more than a century including in urban areas. In this case you have alarmist morons in congress calling for the termination of border patrol officers that were merely doing their job. If we allow idiots like that to influence law enforcement decisions then we may as well not have law enforcement....

...hey! Maybe that's part of the plan. If we're going to defund police then we may as well defund border patrol too.

No it didn't. The agents were from horseback attempting to establish a line not to be crossed, and disuading the people wishing to INGNORE their commands from continuingt to encroach. Doing so on a horse requires fully controlling the horse and making that horse quickly and effectivily move like a middle line backer may move while covering a pass play. I know it may "feel" like the agents were "herding" the illegals, but that is kind of the point isn't it? If when using horses for crowd control?

No SANE person would put themselves in the way of nearly one ton animal that is moving. But clearly some will try, and for the rider he most protect himself as well. Those "split reigns" you saw in the video are a type of reign used in some western riding especially while WORKING on horseback in varied terrains, where the rider is dealing with all kinds of quickly changing things around him, and the reigns can be adjusted to all kinds of lengths. Liberals ranted for years on here about our own homeless situation, and here we are spending money on so called "asylum" seekers just looking a better job while the homeless are still homeless.
