About effing time.

The Times has a paywall, so here are some key snippets.

Now Democrats are about to embark on a strategy to try to demonstrate to those reluctant colleagues — and to the public at large — that the filibuster is being abused by Senate Republicans intent on depriving them and President Biden of crucial legislation...

Thirty-five Republicans voted against the commission and another eight skipped the vote altogether, underscoring how little effort it takes to block legislation under the current rules, which puts the onus on proponents of a bill to produce the 60 votes needed to move it forward...

At the same time, Republicans tied up a bipartisan measure intended to improve American competitiveness with China, even after they had had substantial input into the legislation, which is expected to pass easily. That move made clear to many Democrats that Republicans will not cooperate even on bills they helped write, preferring instead to make life difficult for the majority...

Mr. Schumer said he intended to bring the filibuster showdown to a head beginning next week, by forcing votes on a series of measures that Republicans oppose, including one that was blocked by a Republican filibuster in 2014 that seeks to ensure that women and men receive the same pay for equal work. Mr. Schumer hinted that he could also bring forward legislation on gay rights and gun safety. Most immediately, he promised a vote before the end of June on a sweeping voting rights bill that Democrats say is needed to counter new Republican-led voting restrictions being enacted in states around the nation...

The idea is to show Democrats refusing to change the filibuster rules that Republicans led by Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky and the minority leader, are going to stand in the way of legislation that has widespread support, and that the only way to win their adoption is by overturning the rules.

Thank you. Do what Mitch McConnell fears the most. Make them vote against widely-popular policies. Make the GOP vote against gay right. Make them vote against gun control. Make them vote against raising taxes on the wealthy. Make them vote against voting rights. Make them vote against legalizing marijuana. Make them vote against infrastructure. Make them vote against green energy. Make them vote against Medicare for All.

Manchin and Sinema can pound sand. Make those idiots vote against it as well.

**** it. Why not?

You might get a kick out of this: Joe's infrastructure plan is reasonably popular among Republican voters, given that it's a Dem plan. I don't remember the number, but do remember it went up 6 pts when it's funded by taxing the wealthy & corps!

Of course, because Ds run on policies people like and Rs run on hating people and blocking voters. I wish it was not so, but it's pretty clear what path Rs have chosen.

is it popular if the truth is told which is that it’s really a giveaway to liberal and Marxist agitation groups with only a tiny fraction going to infrastructure? Polls are unreliable because the pollsters want left wing results and put their thumbs on the scale such. A few years ago a poll was done on immigration that gave respondents the truth, that we admit over a million aliens to America legally a year and it showed three quarters of Americans wanted immigration reduced by over 60 percent. Suddenly now the polls on immigration never mention how many aliens are being admitted anymore.

The democrats obstructed every piece of Republican legislation as well.

This is why the democrats are trying to legalize illegals and bring in millions of third world aliens and take federal control of voting procedures, after they eliminate every political constraint to plus 1 democracy they then need to make sure they never lose again.

Illegal immigration is popular now? That took decades, traditionally both parties were opposed. Same as gun control and minimum wage, it was an issue where the public overwhelmingly wanted one thing and the pols blocked it from ever happening.

It is very unpopular but pollsters now phrase questions to get answers more favorable.

Actually the 2018 Harvard poll found LEGAL immigration is very unpopular once Americans know how many are in America every year.

Gun control is not super popular. It is pretty much never a winning issue for the left.

Minimum wage is a winning issue, but only because the public is typically very ignorant of economics. Their wages buy less because the left is importing third world aliens and blowing out federal spending which causes inflation.

If the average voter knew that the minimum wage doesn’t buy the same lifestyle it used to because the government is mortgaging their future to buy votes from the poor and to put extreme demand on resources with insane immigration levels that issue would change.

Oops, speedbump, the R congress decided to try to deny Obama a second term by blocking any sort of legislative accomplishment. If you have an R in front of your name you can't say 'obstruction' without being a hippo-sized hypocrite. Sorry, reality matters.

Yeah and that’s after Obama refused to negotiate with Republicans on anything. This goes back a ways. I personally have no problem with obstruction. The government is a tyranny as it as.

So, the entirety of your argument (what are you arguing for?) is criticism of a question you can't see?

Big deal.

All of the Dems and a significant portion of the Reps blocked everything Trump tried to do and even impeached him...twice...trying to prevent him from a second term and that all failed. It took criminal election fraud to get the job done.

Now THAT'S obstruction that makes the "R congress" action regarding Obama look like child's play.

Amen, brother. Get all their votes on record so it can be used against them in 2022 and 2024.

Should be fun. :D

The problem the Democrats have is not a Republican filibuster, but objections and concerns about various pieces of legislation from other Democrats
Ending the filibuster doesn't change concerns from Democrats about the size of the infrastructure bill, or HR-1, or ending the Hyde Amendment and so forth.

Oh yeah.

You can’t refute the fact that polls consitantly rate ideas like reasonable gun control, infrastructure, health care and the rest.

So your only remaining argument is to make up some nonsense about polls being “rigged”.

Which is parobably received “wisdom” out there in parler land and on your AM radio.

Blowhard ex disc jockeys have been telling their angry white audiences that they are the real “silent majority” for forty years. After all, the term dated back to Spiro Agnew, so an audience of Archie Bunkers is conditioned to hear it.

But that same audience hasn’t been able to produce a majority in the popular vote more than once in this century.

You’ll have to produce that Harvard study you claim says people don’t support legal immigration. I’m sure all the callers on your AM radio hate it.

Gun control is popular, dispite your false claims

Your claims about the minimum wage also have no merit. Massive inflation and job losses have never followed a rise in the minimum wage. Not once. But that’s the argument that Republicans have been making ever since Ronald Reagan. And, that. combined with tax laws that reward unearned income and tax wages at much higher rates have significanty reduced the income growth and wealth of the middle and working classes. The very people who cheer for those policies because the man in the radio told them to wait for the crumbs from the trickle down table.

i hope that HR1 doesn't just become a "see? these Republicans are total assholes" exercise. it needs to be for real passed by whatever means are necessary to get it done.

Imagine that, a liberal media trying to score liberal points. Do you understand that McConnell could have ended the filibuster himself to forward conservative policies under Trump if he had wanted to but he was too quality of an individual to do that? Do you understand that as such that makes Democrats more slime balls than McConnell? Did you already forget about Democrats resisting 45?

Of course, those Trump voters in rural America want to upgrade from dial-up to fast broadband that's in Biden's plan.

I think that is fair, that it is good politics to show the American people the distinction between the two parties. I'm just not sure it's going to work out the way Democrats want it too.

Even if, somehow, they manage to get enough of a majority in the Senate to eliminate the filibuster, sooner or later Republicans are going to be back in power, and are Democrats prepared to live with the laws they maybe able to pass?

I didn’t say they were rigged, I said they were written to elicit specific answers. Which is true.

so popular it doesn’t produce electoral victories.
Your claims about the minimum wage also have no merit. Massive inflation and job losses have never followed a rise in the minimum wage.
contrary to your straw man, that’s not what anyone has ever argued. Minimum wage produces job losses (usually in the form of hours reduction) to people who work in minimum wage industries, which is a small minority of workers. This was confirmed by the University of Washington after Seattle’s minimum wage hike. No one ever argued a minimum wage increase would create mass unemployment., as far as inflation, it is indisputable that inflation occurs. But I argued that inflation was caused by monetary policy and American debt, not minimum wage. Something you in this unhinged argument you overlooked
Not once. But that’s the argument that Republicans have been making ever since Ronald Reagan. And, that. combined with tax laws that reward unearned income and tax wages at much higher rates have significanty reduced the income growth and wealth of the middle and working classes.
yes because democrats destroyed our manufacturing base, and flooded our country with immigrants that Americans never wanted here (see above) and they violently resisted Trump when he wanted to correct this.
The very people who cheer for those policies because the man in the radio told them to wait for the crumbs from the trickle down table.
no one ever made that argument. “Trickle down economics” both the term and concept are a leftist invention to straw man supply side economics which never suggested such a thing.

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) said it is senators' behavior, not Senate rules such as the filibuster, that must change in order to pass legislation through the upper chamber.

“When you have a place that’s broken and not working, and many would say that’s the Senate today, I don’t think the solution is to erode the rules,” Sinema told The Wall Street Journal this week. “I think the solution is for senators to change their behavior and begin to work together, which is what the country wants us to do.”

Sen. Joe Manchin on ending the filibuster: 'Jesus Christ, what don't you understand about 'never'?'

  • Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia on Monday said he'd "never" change his mind on the filibuster.
  • The filibuster means 60 votes are needed to pass most legislation in the Senate.
  • "Jesus Christ, what don't you understand about 'never'?" the Democratic senator said.

You love that word "marxist" a lot these days. Did "socialist" not scare people enough anymore?

The very second McConnell needs the filibuster gone and he is able to, he will do it anyway. He does time and time again and to believe otherwise is the height of naivete.
