Democratic Debate Discussion Thread

 And then they did, right?!?

"It hasn't been this bad since the 1920's!"
- Hillary Clinton defending the Obama Record.

Maybe she should also try that with ISIS... "hey guys, come on now. Knock it off."

Why haven't we tried this political position before?

The fact that a college degree today is devalued to the point of a high school degree 50 years ago isn't an indication of why we need to make college free but rather an indication of a problem regarding primary education and the role and method of college in our society.
However, until we reach that point of fixing the core issue, we have to combat the continual growth of college debt and the lack of opportunity for the poor.

:D Webb should ask, if that doesn't work, whether or not Hillary thinks ISIS would accept a reset button.

I have watched every second of this debate. There has been no mention, by candidates or moderators of the Affordable Care Act. There has been NO mention of the MOST divisive, MOST important, most impactful piece of legislation in the last 25 years. Why? How could this alleged accomplishment of the democratic party be completely ignored in the first democratic primary debate?

They know how disastrous its been for their party.

Cooper needs to ask each candidate if knowing how it turned out, how they could support it.

But then again, this is CNN.

Ouch for Chaffee. "My dad had just died."

"I didn't know what I was voting for." The dog ate his homework?

It would have been better to say, I made a mistake.

Of course, but promising FREEEE!!!!!!!!!!!! is like catnip to democrats.

Bingo! He should have owned it and owned up to it. That would have been a much better answer.

Both Bernie and Clinton gave good answers on immigration. They're demonstrating why they're the two frontrunners in this race.

O'Malley did decently and Webb talking about his immigrant wife and how that's shaped his views was good but lacking detail

edit: O"Malley now speaking strongly about xenophones like Trump and how he passed in-state tuition for immigrants. well done!

So far, jim webb is my favorite demo man.

Ideologically, he is mine too. That being said, his presentation thus far has been ill-advised at best. It's not as tragic as Chaffee, but it's certainly not good.

I'm counting. 1 mention of Obamacare which was pivoted immediately back to immigration and passed around frantically like a scalding hot potato.

I assume when you talk about conservative dems you mean moderate/independent/swing voter. Because if a person can bring "conservative dems'' they can, theoretically, also bring liberal republicans. Those are exactly the people who have swing the last two elections to the republican side- which were essentially referendums on Obama's policies. I respectfully disagree with you that Biden can win without distancing himself from Obama, which would be pretty much impossible. Just a difference of opinion I guess.
Not at all - I respect your opinion.

But if you're speaking of Repubs prevailing in the off-cycle local elections, those are far different than the national elections.

And quite honestly, the mid-term Republican wins are an example of the importance of turnout. They were low turnout in national terms - but the GOP got their votes out locally!

Except we all know it's not actually free, people know this to, it's just the way we use words.

Words mean things.

Yes, many dems are "low information" voters, and yes, they buy it.

Must I link you to all of the democrats who thought Obama was going to give them free stuff?

Wouldn't it be nice to argue that we would like to see more states adopt policies which make it easier for legal citizens of this country to become state citizens in order to get in-state tuition rates before undocumented immigrants?

There are 6 debates. They can't talk about everything in just 1 of them.

Both are issues, climate change being an issue that is hugely important worldwide.

No, it's a false issue that's big for those that want bigger government and more control out of the hands of the people and into the hands of bureaucracy

Both parties have low info voters. Sure, link anecdotal crap that can be found for either side. Back to the debate..

Shh. That'd be an issue that would ACTUALLY have an impact on the cost of college tuition and wouldn't hit on a big wedge issue, so you need to zip that **** up.

I think it proves that none of these candidates, nor CNN WANTS to talk about it. Because it is bad.

Reframing the email issue as "not serious" has political viability to Democrats interested in trashing Republican fixation on bringing down the House of Clinton for 23 years, but is dubious otherwise. Is it on the same tier as starting a war or giving tax breaks to the wealthiest minority? Maybe not. But it is a serious matter for a Secretary of State. If these indiscretions of access and security of government documents can bring down one of the most prominent Generals (and subsequently Director of one of our illustrious intelligence agencies) in contemporary American history, it's not a trifling matter for the former Secretary of State.

General Petraeus gave a classified list to his lover / biographer. Hillary hasn't been accused of anything, so the two are not remotely similar. ,

Its a matter of degree as well, no?

How many times was the word "free" used in the republican debates?

Ive watched them-I can't think of one.

Dems like free stuff (ie stuff other people pay for).

Its ok to admit it.
