Nobody is claiming Martin doesn't... But he had the upper hand from the first punch, and when Z screamed for help over and over and Martin refused to stop the beating, he gave Z the legal right to defend himself under Florida law.
Even if what you say is true, and M attacked Z in self defense, that didn't give him the right to beat him to death, unless it can be proved that Z pulled his gun right from the beginning and was trying to shoot M the entire time.

I know people are of the mindset.that killing a black kid is always ok but there are rules to using force, that's why its called justifiable use of force. Zimmerman's minor boo boos are out of proportion to any threat he faced from a 17 year old with candy, while being trained in MMA and with a gun and a 50 pound weight advantage. The jurors don't know or care about the back stories all they see is a body in grass and they are wondering what kind of wet grass fight would cause someone to fear for their life.

Yes it is key... Because it shoots down the notion that Z was on top, because Martin was on his stomach, but was shot in the chest... And none of the witnesses, even the ones who testified to seeing Z on top after the shot, saw Z get up but did not see the body move... That makes it impossible for Z to have shot him in that position.
