Conservative thought may be prohibited on this board, but a video game review might be allowed.

When CyberPunk 2077 was released for the 2020 holiday season, it garnered many negative reviews due to poor performance on consoles. The PS 4 XBox One stuttered with bad frame rates and freezing issues.

Simply put, the game was not designed for consoles and consoles didn't have the power needed to run it. The PS 5 and XBox X can play the game, since they have basically PC architecture now. So the thing is, play this on PC.

Graphics and visuals on a PC equipped with a NVidia RTX level card are stunning. With both Ray Tracing and DLSS (deep learning super sampling) a hyper-realistic world emerges from Night City and even the sub-par acting of Keanu Reeves doesn't distract too much.

But beyond the stunning visuals, is the game any good?

Initially there is the shock of what the game is, and isn't. It is presented as a shooter, indeed the first couple of hours will have most convinced that this is an FPS. But it isn't - it is an adventure game with a complex leveling system. CD Project Red put a lot of Witcher 3 into the game. Decisions made have a strong impact on how the game plays out. This is well beyond a "good path bad path" system - decisions often have subtle impacts that show up hours after a decision is made. CP 2077 has the shooting mechanics that rival Modern Warfare - in adventure game. This is a very good mix.

V, the primary protagonist is a mercenary in a world where such people are encouraged, even necessary. This it the first point about CP 2077, the world itself is the star. This isn't unique, the same can be said with Elder Scrolls and Red Dead Redemption II. Night City is a living, breathing place. The NPC's have their own lives and carry on with or without the player. These are not cookie cutter blowup dolls like those in GTA 5, but convincing actors in a thriving city. Most react in a realistic way, though few will blink if you draw a gun. This may be by design, due to the nature of night city.

The main story is engaging, well written, well acted - and short. If you concentrate on just the main story, you'll complete the game in less than 20 hours. This is not Skyrim with 60 hours of main plot. But the short main quest is augmented by dozens of side quests. But the side quests are excellent - where I often play games like this with repetitive side quests that are little more than filler, the quests in CP 2077 are often thought provoking and deep - not to mention dark.

This is a mature game - extreme violence and adult subject matter. Night City is a brutal place run by the typical villain of corporations. The police are corrupt and the populace is well armed. The high end visuals mean that this often plays like a Quinten Tarantino movie, blood and guts.

Then there is the nudity. Yes, there is nudity. Not just boobs, but erect penises and vaginas. It's not a porno game - but it doesn't shy away from anything. Drug use is common, as is desperation from crushing poverty.

I strongly recommend this game for those with a powerful PC who enjoy violent adventure games and are not offended by nudity and gore. My ranking holds Red Dead Redemption 2 as the king of this sort of game, followed by Witcher 3, then Skyrim, then Cyberpunk 2077, then GTA 5.

Could never get into the game, is the open world aspect similar to GTA5? (Meaning basically go out and do whatever you want.)

Sounds interesting. Maybe the next Steam sale.

Yes and no. It is more mission structured than GTA 5. Less random encounters. Which I liked because it leads to scripted events rather than repetition of rival gangs trying to kill you.

Cyberpunk was a fun game.

Right now I’m working through hogwarts and will probably go to red fall next when it comes out in may. At some point I have to play the final fantasy 7 prequel.

I'm not really a Harry Potter fan, is Hogwarts worth checking out for those not into the lore?

It’s your fairly typical rpg, do quests, unlock stuff, etc

I couldn't either. Tried all three protagonists and just couldn't seem to care if I progressed past about 18hrs.

Warning, it's a bit woke. But, if you can stomach that, get it. Graphics are amazing and game play is very fun.

I'll load it up again and see how much further I can go, we'll see.

Because Cyberpunk is such a short game, I've moved on to Assassins Creed - Valhalla. So far, I find V to be far more endearing and worth caring about than Eivor - but I'm only a few hours in.

Played a little last night, I had forgotten some of the mechanics especially under fire but we'll see how this goes.

I played about 15 minutes of it, and felt the exact same way. Got a refund a few hours later.

One of my favorite games of all time. At it heart, it's an open-world RPG, not a traditional shooter.

It's a fun game however it's only asset is being alone in its setting for the genre. GTA 5 and RDR2 are much deeper and polished, unless you are super excited about a cyberpunk world the game isn't worth playing over the Rockstar games

Red Dead 2 is one of the finest games ever made, and is a better game than CP2077. I'd say it's neck in neck with Witcher 3.

That said, I view CP2077 as superior to GTA 5 in most ways.

To be fair, GTA 5 was released in 2013 - it's a 10 year old game. For it's era, it was amazing.

But it really can't compare to CP2077 due to its age,

Off the bat, CP2077 is raytraced spectacle with DLSS in 4K glory - probably the best looking game ever made. GTA5 wasn't particularly impressive even in 2013 due to being a 3rd gen console game. Of course you need top notch hardware to run it.

The first issue is combat. As I said in my review, CyberPunk has the mechanics of a first person shooter. The weapons are precise and expertly modeled, Certainly not the case with GTA - which still was constrained by the limitations of the consoles of the time. The arcade combat was fun, but just isn't in the same class as the depth of CP. Ten years is a long time.

Then there are the vehicles. The floaty vehicles of GTA 5 were really it's worst feature - even for the era the modeling was not good - driving on ice in the desert sun.. The inclusion of aircraft and watercraft for GTA gives it a boost in this category. Still, vehicle handling is pretty poor.

Story - GTA 5 was hilarious - well written and very enjoyable. CP is pure drama - but also well written. - I'd call it a tie depending on whether one is looking for a comedy or a drama.

Depth - GTA 5 has easily three times the main story line that CP2077 does. CP is a short game, that's all there is to it. Because it's short, it doesn't squeeze out as much from characters as GTA 5. I suspect that CDPR is holding back content in order to sell DLC.

Missions: Here is where CP2077 really shines, While the writing in GTA 5 was entertaining, the missions really boiled down to about 3 repeating styles. The shooting gallery slog, the race/outrun missions, and the foot chase missions, I was both impressed and shocked by the sheer variety of missions in CP (spoiler - nailing a convict to a cross?) But also, driving and combat in CP are just so damned good.

I liked GTA 5, but I don't think it really holds a candle.

I just finished it on the Playstation 5. Glad I waited a few years until most of the kinks were worked out, because I found it to be an amazing experience. A little rough around the edges in some aspects, but the world they built just felt alive in a way you don't see in many games.

I remember when this game was first released, and I remember hearing about all the bugs in the game. At the time, I thought it was too expensive. Not that Jedi: Survivor is not overpriced, but for the time, CP, which was $59.95 and not available through Steam at the time, was just overpriced.

Having watch the game play and having seen how the mechanics of the game work, it seems fascinating. I would love to play it now. Perhaps it will offer more than the average DLC, maybe not, but it still seems like an adventure worth the time and effort.
