While the republicans have spent decades saying that democrats are soft on crime, 8 of the 10 states with the highest crime rates voted for trump in 2020.
One, Georgia, didn't vote for trump but Georgia is a red state. Republicans control the state and have controlled it for a long time.
California, New York and Illinois, states the right loves to point to when complaining about crime, have LOWER crime rates than those 10 states.
mitch mcconnell was complaining about how democrats are soft on crime yet Kentucky is rated number 3 in highest states with crime.
The truth is that a person is more safe from crime in a state that voted for Joe Biden than those 8 states with the highest crime rates who voted for trump.
The murder rate is in San Francisco, Nancy Pelosi's district, is 50% lower than it is in Bakersfield, which is in kevin mccarthy's district.
The murder rate per capita was 40% higher in states won by trump than states Biden won.
Just as with most things with the republican party, this is claim about democrats and crime is not true.
From the article:
“We found that murder rates are, on average, 40% higher in the 25 states Donald Trump won in the last presidential election compared to those that voted for Joe Biden. In addition, murder rates in many of these red states dwarf those in blue states like New York, California, and Massachusetts.”
“Mississippi had the highest homicide rate at 20.50 murders per 100,000 residents,” Third Way reports, “followed by Louisiana at 15.79, Kentucky at 14.32, Alabama at 14.2, and Missouri at 14. The national average was 6.5 per 100,000 residents, but the top five states had rates more than twice that high.”
