Ireland’s highest court isn’t sweet on tax breaks for footlongs.

The country’s Supreme Court ruled that the starch used in Subway sandwiches is too sugary to meet the definition of “bread” — a legal distinction that would have saved the firm some dough.

In deciding whether to give the fast-food chain a tax break for serving a “staple” food item, the five-judge panel ruled that the bread’s sugar-to-flour content is roughly five times too high to qualify, according to the Irish Independent.

Welp. There you have it. If it ain't bread, then what is it?

OK, can you give an example of good fast food then?
Five guys isn't too unhealthy if you forego the bun, fries, and shake. Chipotle is fine is you don't do the rice or brown beans either. Panera is usually not terrible if you stay away from the pastries.

There is a place near me called Rebol near me which is great. https://www.wearerebol.com/

5G fries are terrible, but I cant think of eating a burger without fries anymore.

Wasnt there someone who claimed he lost weight eating nothing but Subways?

And British food manufacturers dont?

Not in bread, no, and not in the same volume as America.

Ive eaten bread in the UK. Nothing special about it. In fact many people there put jam on them, so its no different than the sugar we put in ours. :p

I have never really liked fries or ketchup. Give me onion rings any day :p

He did, by only eating small turkey and veggie subs I believe

Jared Fogle gets prison food these days.........

With that much sugar, essentially cake. ;) This is really just a legal technicality that the tabloid hacks are making cheap headlines out of. The real story is another company trying to take advantage of tax breaks that were never intended to be used in that manner. Or "Pull a Trump" as it will now be called.

Nuts, they are fantastic, peel is left on, canola oil, thick cut...you can even reheat them in a pan and they are still great.
You totally skipped over Chipotle, which is the correct answer.

Yes, it was Jared. Unfortunately he loved kid porn and paying to have sex with minors more than he did a foot long.

ALL BREAD IS STARCH.

Starch converts to sugar.

Did Ireland also make the same determination for potatoes, rice and pasta? ROFL

Oops, youre right I screwed up. I got 5G and Shake Shack mixed up.

Apologies. 5G fries is good, its SS's fries that suck.

i wouldn't call their bread that sugary. McDonalds is another story.

Subway bread can be kind of dry depending on who makes it. i wouldn't recommend getting the wheat bread toasted.

What's wrong with toasting the WW bread? Ive always asked them to toast it...

Well it is still bread, but not bread that falls under the law Subway tried to get their bread taxed under, which would have been a nice tax/VAT break for them but sadly, too much sugar to fall into that category.

and what do potatoes, rice and pasta have to do with this story? They are not subject to this law.

And this is not about converting to sugar, but having sugar already in the bread when it is being sold.

this bread for example has just 1.7% of sugar per 100 grams so it would have been falling under that Irish law.

The
Great Value White Bread, 20 oz
from Walmart also has just 2% sugar (of which 1 was added) and would have also fallen under the Irish law (most likely) but Subway just uses too much sugar for their bread. Brown bread from Subway for example has almost 5% of sugar, way too much if the cut off percentage for that tax break is 2% sugar.

I have never eaten their since we found out they were spraying their bread with azodicarbonamide, the plastic additive they use in your yoga mats and shoe soles to add the air between the plastic. mmmmmm yummmm. Sugar is the least of anyones problems in these foods.
