Had the shopping experience not been frenzied and crowded, the pepper spraying would not have happened. Frustration. This wasn't about frustration; it was about greed and barbarism.
So i was at Wal-mart last night among other places(went with my aunt's, uncle, and mom) and it just seems like Walmart wants people to fight, and get hurt. Atleast where I was at, they had things stacked up on pallets, and people would stand around them and wait for them to actually go on sale, and then people would just pile on them, and go at it. It was crazy, and the other stores just weren't like that. Not surprising stuff like this happens.
This is true - I've never seen it but I've seen them setting up displays in stores.
If they were remotely concerned about safety and orderliness they'd forgo anything that would invite a massive crowd - doing things online with a ticker system would be most ideal.
Interesting question. Yes, I do think manners can be taught, leading to classier people. Of course it requires the desire to learn, so.......I dunno, we definitely need to do something to improve the general public decorum if this kind of stuff is going to keep happening. Can "class" be taught?
At least parenting classes can be taught, which is why I hope that the ubiquitous cameras will end up identifying the pepper-spraying woman, who had her kids with her.
That or they could just form a line, and give out tickets for things on sale. They were doing that for some items last night(my aunts stayed in line for 2 hours for digital cameras), but other items, especially the movies, and games, were freaking insane. There were atleast 4 fights while we were there. People be crazy
This right here is why I won't go into crowded places without a handgun on my person.

This right here is what gives gun owners a bad name.
Oh, and why is that? I have carried a gun probably 75% of the time I've been out of my home for more than a decade without ever drawing it, Maggie. There have been two occasions where I have thought I might need to, but thankfully both were able to be dealt with via other means.
I have ZERO faith in my fellow human beings. I understand that nobody out there is looking out for ME except ME. To that end I expect to be the one who walks away IF it ever gets to a point where I am involved in an altercation. That's just simple common sense so far as I'm concerned.
You do realize that you implied you would draw your gun at the lady with the pepper spray don't you? It's not just this particular post that drew me to that conclusion, though. You often post in bravado when the topic of guns comes up. I realize you're proud of your knowledge of guns and your ability to carry in your state. (Can't in Illinois.) I'm actually rather envious because I assume you really do know how to use it and are completely comfortable with it. I have a .38 at home. Got it right after 9/11. Took classes; did some target shooting. But I'm not proficient. I keep it in a locked drawer, unloaded, trigger locked, and a firing pin blocker (whatever that thingie is called). And because of all that, I probably shouldn't even own one.

Good for you Maggie! And the really sad thing is that it is not only Tigger with this macho itchy trigger attitude when these type of things come up. There are times that some here are just drooling in anticipatory glee that they just might get to shoot somebody and all those target practice sessions pay off.
I am quite well aware of what I have implied. In fact I was very blunt about what I would have done, and I will not deny it. I have no problem with the idea of having to do what's necessary if the situation were to arise. That doesn't mean I ever WANT to have to shoot anyone. It just means that I have become comfortable with the fact that carrying a gun does mean that potential is increased.
My question for you would be.... Why did you get the gun? Was it for protection? If so, then it is doing you no good in the state it is currently in, and you'd be better off selling it.

Greed exists as a solitary condition (no external trigger needed).
Barbarism, I could maybe go there. Mob mentality and all... if she had pepper sprayed someone, then grabbed a $9.95 umbrella ($4.95 on sale, $2.95 between midnight and 1:00 AM only, designer colors) and repeatedly stabbed the victim until entrails were rent upon the floor, then yeah -- barbarism
That is disgusting. The least people can do is call for help, there is no excuse for allowing someone to die so you can keep shopping. Some people don't even deserve to call themselves human. At least an off duty nurse and paramedic tried to help, but who knows how long he went without attention and if that was what caused his condition to elevate to fatal. As another example of barbarism, a 61-year old man collapsed in a Charleston Target, and most shoppers just stepped around and over him.

U.S. News - Alleged pepper-spraying Walmart shopper surrenders
A fight for bath towels, purportedly recorded at a Michigan store, has become a YouTube sensation. Cheap towels also caused mayhem at a Walmart in Oregon, Ohio.
"They were fighting over bath towels on sale for $1.88, as ridiculous as that sounds," Police Sergeant Jason Druckenmiller told Reuters. "A woman tried to get her hands on some towels when she was pushed from behind, and that's when she came out swinging."
