DENVER (AP) — With reggae music pumping in the background and flashing disco-style lights, members of the recreational pot club lit up in celebration of the new year — and a new place to smoke legally among friends.

Club 64, in an industrial area just north of downtown Denver, opened at 4:20 p.m. on Monday, with some 200 people signed up. The opening came less than 24 hours after organizers announced they would charge a $29.99 admission price for the bring-your-own pot club.

The private pot dens popped up less than a month after Colorado's governor signed into law a constitutional amendment allowing recreational pot use. Club 64 gets its name from the number of the amendment.

Two Colorado clubs were believed to be the first legal pot dens in the nation. The Denver Post reported that a similar pot club opened earlier Monday in the small southern Colorado town of Del Norte.

Colorado's marijuana amendment prohibits public consumption, and smoke-free laws also appear to ban indoor smokeouts. But Club 64 attorney Robert Corry said private pot dens are permissible because marijuana isn't sold, nor is it food or drink.

A bar decorated with blue Christmas lights handed out sodas and Club 64's official snacks — Goldfish and Cheetos. The snacks were inspired by Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, who warned marijuana users the night of the marijuana vote, "don't break out the Cheetos or Goldfish too quickly."

"It's just a place for adults to exercise their constitutional rights together," Corry said. "We're not selling pot here.".....snip~

Private Clubs have now Sprung up in Colorado for Marijuana recreational use.. They say their legal because they are not selling anything. Thoughts?

So do you think the Fed will go after them over this. California didn't get to push it to this level and they ended up shutting them down.

I think we'll find the fed backing off the WoD, actually.

we're missing out on revenue because these are BYOP. they ought to be able to sell cannabis onsite and pay taxes on the sale. i'm sure it's only a matter of time, though.

when it comes to cannabis, its time for the nation to admit that pot neoprohibition is game over and it's time to try something else.

Relax! This is little different than "private" bars/clubs to which their members may bring their own alcoholic beverages and enjoy a social life within a "dry" county. Think of the increase in snack sales tax revenue!

Yeah, but what about the Cops catching them driving out of these Clubs? Wouldn't there be like a concern over driving while under the influence? Wouldn't it be just like setting up roadblocks for drinking and driving? They have the laws to consider over public safety, don't they?

What? You think that there is no longer plenty of weed fueling the minds of the golden state? Get real!

Racing away from the weed club at 1/2 the posted speed limit? Relax and leave these folks alone. The more that morons try to put that toothpaste (decriminalization of marijuana) back into the tube (under huge, nanny state control) the more rediculous their "small gov't" chants will appear.

 I didn't say that now.....trust me. It beats anything Illinois and Indiana is doing. As desperate as they are for money. I am surprised they didn't legalize it here in Illinois.

At least modifying what a "dangerous substance" is. Alcohol has been proven to be far more dangerous (socially destructive) than marijuana, yet we all know what happens when you "ban" alcohol. Telling folks that their recreational drug choice is "socially destructive", as they watch a drunken, abusive parent preach the "evils of weed" to them, is not going to fly any longer. ;)

I think it's great! Maybe I'm just a cheapskate, but $30 admission for a place you have to bring your own pot to seems pretty steep.

Perhaps I misconstrued your reference to a federal "shut down" in CA.

Well what do cops in the states do about drunk drivers?

They would have to prove level of intoxication, which they cannot currently do. It is impossible to tell with current drug tests if someone is intoxicated or has simply ingested THC in the past few days/weeks. They could give field sobriety tests but those are only a relatively minor indicator of intoxication unless one is stumbling and thoroughly wasted, many people with blood alcohol content above the legal limit can pass field sobriety tests. BAC is solid evidence of alcohol intoxication that is difficult to contest in court.

They test here in Chicago if they consider one under the influence. So I don't think that would be a difficulty if they wanted to implement such. Illinois is Zero tolerance.

No kidding, 30 bux times 200 people = 6000 USD...for a sound system, lights, and Cheetos?

Isn't capitalism wonderful? It is pure genius that someone saw this "need" for a weed club and that stoned morons are willing to pay a fee to "party" with each other. It will likely soon fade into non-existance, as some bright folks open up a competing establishment that charges less, rinse and repeat...

Yeah, they're only able to offer it at that price because it's new and novel. I can understand the cover fee since they can't make money off the weed. I think something like $10 entry is more fair.

Or even more intelligent, they could be a full service restaurant that will cook you whatever you want. "I want pizza with onion rings on top! Oh, oh, oh! And goldfish! And cheetohs!"

There is so much to capitalize on with hungry stoners.

I have no problem with it. Just call it something catchy, like Brainfry.

I wish a federal law enforcer would just "happen" upon these places.

And I wish our federal law enforcement was doing better things with their time than dancing to the malicious whims of curmudgeon assholes while being more detrimental to society than the substance they're prohibiting.
