Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling will be banned for life and fined $2.5 million for racist comments, NBA commissioner Adam Silver announced Tuesday.
The move comes after days of outrage at ugly words attributed to Sterling from a taped conversation with an ex-girlfriend.
The comments, where the owner seemed to say he didn't want his much-younger girlfriend hanging out with Black people on Instagram or bringing them to games, were first by TMZ and then in another recording posted on the website Deadspin.
The NBA had said it was unable to authenticate the tapes, but Sterling's wife told KABC-TV in Los Angeles that it was her husband on the recordings.
At a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, Commissioner Silver said an investigation had confirmed that the voice on the tapes and the "hateful opinions voiced" were those of Sterling.

So who owns the Clippers, and would anybody know the difference if the answer is "nobody?"
Seems a bit harsh.

Donald Stern let this go on for far too long in all ways. The NBA is awesome.
This is the same NBA who let DeShawn Stevenson play even after pleading "no contest" to having sex with a 14 year old girl, who he got drunk.
He owns them but it seems his ownership is subject to the provisions of the NBA constitution.
It's harsh but from the press conference I just saw it's naturally all about money. Seems lots of sponsors pulled their support because of Sterling's statements. They probably needed to have someone tossed under the bus.

Fairly predictable.
Remind me to never tell off a girlfriend who is literally half my age over a smart phone with a recorder. Wow.
Remember when Isaiah Thomas said if Larry Bird was black, he'd be just another good player? Would that get him banned now, too? Does this apply to players for anything they say, too?
Slippery slope, but here we are.
Barkley's "But we are a black league" was also racist.
more deflections
How surprising!!
You wonder why right-wingers obsess so much over some old guy being called racist.
WOW!!!!!!!
im surprised at the severity because i read LOTS of speculations and since the NBA constitution is private it was all rumor and leak stuff. But a lot of guesses were 1 million dollar fine and a year suspension.
SO a life time suspension and 2.5 million dollars is surprising based on the previous rumors but at the same time not totally shocked. I thought it was going to be something hardcore and its merited.
Not suspending him for life and trying to force him out really would hurt that franchise s long as he owned it and the NBA.
