Christian music star Jennifer Knapp comes back and comes out - CNN.com

I guess Christian "music" (if you call it that) is really just all about money, since artists don't have to have any talent or inspiration to do it . Just write the same bland crap about God, Jesus, etc etc, put it to a few chords, and voila! You have a better time getting airplay than you would as a mainstream artist. I'm still glad for her though. Money isn't worth living in denial, so I'm happy she's seen the light. It's funny how her ex-fans turn on her so quickly. Just shows how little morality they have.

Where did you get this idea? I'm sure there are Christian artists out there that don't really walk the walk, but there are some very, very talented Christian artists that I bet DO walk the walk. Just because you dislike their music doesn't mean they're not talented.

Clearly, judging this Christian musician arbitrarily is bigoted. While judging Christian music arbitrarily is, what, altruistic? I think I'm smelling a slight hint of hypocrisy.

I'm fond of Nicole C Mullen myself.

As with most arts, I'm usually not overly concerned with the artists' private life, political leanings, personal morals, or whatnot. Mostly I just ask "is their art good?"

I kind of had to adopt that attitude, or I'd almost never get to see a movie or listen to any music.... since there are very very few actors, singers or musicians whose politics or personal morals are at all admirable IMO.

Now when you have one who (stupidly, IMO) insists on making a big deal out of their politics, religion or whatever, who makes themself the spokesperson for X cause, then I might get sufficiently annoyed to cease from buying that artists' works.

Steven Curtis Chapman is one of my favorites. Remember what happened to his little girl a few years back? I cried when I heard. :(

There are no Christians who "walk the walk" period. And I'm very glad of that:

"Whoever works on the Sabbath shall be put to death" - Bible

I bet they do about as much as I bet Catholic priests Just because you dislike their music doesn't mean they're not talented.
From a critic's view, Miley Cyrus looks like Beethoven in comparison to the most talented Christian "music" artist you could name. Even if I was a Christian, I'd be disgusted with modern Christian music since it dumbs down Christianity beyond all comparison.

Luke 14: 3-6
3And Jesus answered and spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?"
4But they kept silent. And He took hold of him and healed him, and sent him away.
5And He said to them, "Which one of you will have a son or an ox fall into a well, and will not immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?"
6And they could make no reply to this.

Its funny what kind of story you get when you look at all the information. :doh

I usually find the personal morals of actors, singers, and musicians very admirable (much more so than those who "arbitrarily judge them") *snicker*

So the Bible contradicts itself. What else is new?

But out of fairness, I know that most Christians say that the Old Law no longer applies. But at the same time I see Christians quoting passages from books like Leviticus as justification for condemning gays (but they conveniently ignore the passages that require death for rape victims, people who work on the Sabbath, etc etc). So they want to have their cake and eat it too.

I dated a chick from Nashville once that worked in the country music biz.

She said that all the artists that couldn't make it in the Nashville scene just became Christian artists so they could sell some records.

There seems to be differing opinions as to what walking the walk means. As far as the majority o f Christian music these days it is derivative of pop music and has very little to do with creativity.

Christian-bashing aside (yeah I know I got off on another anti-Christian rant which has nothing to do with this topic, and I apologize), you just stated my point exactly. I don't hate music just because it's "Christian". But just from a pure critical view, most contemporary Christian music isn't very good. There's no originality or creativity. Plus it's dumbed down to the point that it doesn't even feel "sacred", just cheesy and comical (which defeats the whole purpose).

I've listened to some gospel music and classical choir music (ex. The Messiah by Handel), and IMO that is "Christian music" done right. This contemporary stuff is just lame period. If the idea is to make Christian music that will appeal to kids, then it isn't working, trust me. I knew fundie kids in high school who laughed at this stuff when the teachers weren't looking. I guess if a kid is so sheltered that this is the only stuff they have to listen to, then they might learn to like it. But for that matter, the same's true if a kid's parents only let him listen to classical opera or gospel.

Hey, I ain't no bible-thumper, to say the least, but there is some "christian" music out there that just kicks my ass.

Indeed. I'm pretty sure that Jennifer Knapp will get a large audience from gay Christians. And they're out there, even if the Religious Right likes to pretend there aren't.

Wasn't Juda's gay? I mean, he was kissin' all over Jesus and all. Just sayin'. ::roll:

So is Rob Halford from Judas Priest.

Um...usually people actually say WHERE in the Bible the quote is, not just "Bible". Heh. We aren't under the Old Law anymore. Christ brought about a New Covenant.

I agree that a lot of it is just glorified pop music. Everything I listen to is definitely not that and isn't "dumbed down" Christianity. Can you give examples of what you're speaking about? How many Christian artists have you ever really listened to?
