Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson wants to open city-owned grocery stores to serve neighborhoods where Walmart and Whole Foods stores have closed.

"All Chicagoans deserve to live near convenient, affordable, healthy grocery options. We know access to grocery stores is already a challenge for many residents, especially on the South and West sides. A better, stronger, safer future is one where our youth and our communities have access to the tools and resources they need to thrive. My administration is committed to advancing innovative, whole-of-government approaches to address these inequities." said Mayor Brandon Johnson,

“The City of Chicago is reimagining the role government can play in our lives by exploring a public option for grocery stores via a municipally owned grocery store and market,” said Ameya Pawar/Economic Security Project.

Also, a new woke term "food justice" is introduced:

“The strides being made in the realm of food justice are now poised for a significant advancement towards innovative solutions,” said Anton Seals Jr., Lead Steward of Grow Greater Englewood

Just another step toward socialism. Let in millions, claim we can't handle them, give them food, clothing, medical care, free education, put them up in hotels, tent encampment, former school buildings, and then tell us the only solution is government run everything.
I find it difficult to believe that very many americans are really in favor to this BS.

Many Americans support Trump. Once you wrap your head around that, nothing is difficult to believe.

So putting grocery stores in food deserts is not a good thing?

Any time the government takes over a business that is normally handled by the private sector, it paves the road to corruption and misery.

As you probably know, the problems are many when it comes to corruption in Chicago - - the city is NOTORIOUS for the worst corruption in the country. This proposed Government-owned grocery store chain is doomed to be mismanaged, and a failure.

A different version of the TVA that brought electricity to areas not served by the private sector.
Did the local thugs steal the electrical wires so many times that no one wanted to put them back anymore?

They should examine why the private sector has bailed and fix that.
And in the meantime, people should starve?
Why are there no groceries there? Why would a government run grocery not suffer the same issues? Wouldn't it be better to address those issues?
And in the meantime, what? People starve?

BRILLIANT.

Chicago keeps electing one idiot after another for mayor.

What a bunch of fools these people in Chicago seem to be.

How naive. Government consistently provides goods and services with less corruption and misery than businesses.

But what if the businesses don't service a particular community? Should that government force them to service all communities? Wouldn't that be authoritarianism?

Right wingers demand poor people starve to death. News at 11.
Lefties allow criminals to run rampant, forcing private businesses to close so they can replace them with gubmint owned stores. In other news, water is wet.

Naive?

If you even understood what the word naive means, you not have written the profoundly naive statement that followed.

Sorry. I was trying to be kind.

I live in a suburban town of 15K people with a low crime rate. It’s a great little place to live.

There are ZERO grocery stores in my town.

(There was one, about 12 years ago when I first moved here, and they closed. It was an older, small grocery store and simply couldn’t compete with Walmart and other massive stores in neighboring towns. The “chain” simply closed - finished out its current lease - and left. Property sat vacant for a few years, then a liquor store and a gym divided and took over the space)

If you are reliant upon public transportation - even in my suburban NJ town - it’s an ordeal to get to a grocery store. 🤷‍♀️

My town now runs a shuttle service to OTHER TOWNS for seniors and those without transportation twice a week so that they can go grocery shopping, pick up prescriptions, etc.

Government often steps in to fill where “capitalism” fails its citizens and residents. 🤷‍♀️ For our town, it’s a shuttle service. In Florida in 2019 and now Chicago, their governments opened their own stores.

Good for them for seeing a need and addressing it. That’s what most of us expect from our local government - address the needs of the people in the towns.
