I learned today that half of the honey imported into the EU is fake. I needed to find out what they ment by fake and apparently there are several ways to cheat.
I believe I've been cheated a couple of times when I wanted to try something new. It simply didn't taste like Swedish honey, almost like perfumed syrup... but instead of questioning whether it was honey, I blamed it on the fact that I probably have a rather conservative taste sometimes.
How wrong you can be, you learn something new every day. Sticking to swedish honey from now on... I am quite sure that half of the honey produced within EU also will turn out to be fake...
- Honey is mixed with for example sugar and syrup
- Products are sold as honey even though they contain only fructose, glucose and honey aroma
- The honey is harvested early before it is ripe, then dried, filtered and seeded
- Bees are fed sugar solution and flavoring during a nectar flow, which creates a honey-like substance that lacks pollen
