I learned today that half of the honey imported into the EU is fake. I needed to find out what they ment by fake and apparently there are several ways to cheat.

  • Honey is mixed with for example sugar and syrup
  • Products are sold as honey even though they contain only fructose, glucose and honey aroma
  • The honey is harvested early before it is ripe, then dried, filtered and seeded
  • Bees are fed sugar solution and flavoring during a nectar flow, which creates a honey-like substance that lacks pollen

I believe I've been cheated a couple of times when I wanted to try something new. It simply didn't taste like Swedish honey, almost like perfumed syrup... but instead of questioning whether it was honey, I blamed it on the fact that I probably have a rather conservative taste sometimes.



How wrong you can be, you learn something new every day. Sticking to swedish honey from now on... I am quite sure that half of the honey produced within EU also will turn out to be fake...

Before the honey is formed, the hives contain only nectar. There is no pollen and it is not honey. You can (apparently) make it look and behave like honey by feeding the bees liquid sugar during this phase of the process.
 
I've harvested few hives but never come across this 'unripe' honey phase. Hives are often fed 'liquid sugar' (sugar water) during the winter season as a supplemental feed for the bees. They need it because you've harvested the honey they had stored to feed themselves. I'm guessing that your 'unripe' honey might be from too much sugar water being used for too long in the season, but that's a strange thing to do as it costs more money and time than letting the bees make their natural harvest.
 
Companies may hide the origin of honey, because they don’t want consumers to know that it likely came from China. A place where the chances of it being diluted with corn syrup, water or tainted with other products appears to be the highest.

Yes I know, but this "false honey making" entails that they feed the hives with liquid sugar during the spring and summer month in order to be able to harvest many times. This creates a honeylike substance that doesn't contain any pollen and that are mostly just dextrose.

Yes That is another way to fake it apparently. They ultrafiltrate the honey to mask where the pollen comes from. They then claim it comes from the country in which it is sold.
 
I've never heard of fake honey, but I'm not surprised it exists. In this country the best way to buy honey is from local stores that often stock locally made products. I've never bought honey that didn't clearly say "Pure clover honey" or whichever flower the pollen came from; as being the only ingredient. You could always order it online!
 
Gosh. This thread sent me rushing to read the label on my (store brand) honey in a plastic bear. It's 100% honey from US, Canada and Argentina. I mostly use it in my tea. So that got me thinking, and now I'm typing this with a nice hot cup of peppermint tea beside me. Thanks!

These marketers are very sneaky, they market olive oil often mixed with canola, sunflower, or safflower oils.. I've bought blends before because I didn't look close enough at the label. Pure olive oil or EVOO are NOT cheap, so I've learned to read the fine print and if it costs the same as vegetable oil, it's not pure olive oil.,
 
All imported honey is apparently fake!!!!
Beekeepers had honey tested using new DNA technology, and ALL imported honey contained very little actual honey, instead, it mostly consisted of sugar and other sweeteners. According to beekeeping entrepreneurs, the counterfeit honey comes from China, where they've learned how to adulterate products in ways that ordinary inspections fail to detect, making it appear to be honey when it's mostly syrup and other sugar-based substances.

I remember the Chinese drywall that was loaded with chemicals, along with the kids little soldiers painted with lead based paint.
I also remember the dogs killed by chemicals in dog food.
If a country doesn’t give a shit about their environment or their people, their products will be shitty as well.
You get what you pay for.
