I meant on the ground? Not lookin' up.
Anyway im still confused as to what is significant about 55 miles?
Can you see 55 miles away in any weather condition?
I'm guessing that's the distance from some part of Alaska (Palin's house?) to Russia.
Seriously? Palin made a stupid remark. Move on.

In extremely clean air in Arctic or mountainous areas, the visibility can be up to 70 kilometres (43 mi) to 100 kilometres (62 mi).

No I'm serious. Can you see 55 miles in any weather condition? I tried it the other day and I only saw about 5-6 miles.
Soooo, there is no purpose to this?

When looking an open, flat area (like at sea level looking across the ocean) the horizon is ~22 miles away. Can you see 55 miles away in any weather condition?
Obviously, this assumes your target is large enough to see.
:roflThus, my Rosie O'Donnell comment.
