Can someone, anyone tell me exactly why this is hurting the GOP?

When they had their chance they increased spending and passed the patriot act.

Sure. But that was different times. Different circumstances.

I'm not saying I agree with the spending increases then or the Patriot Act, but I can understand and accept that all that resulted from world events. Republicans didn't increase spending or pass unpopular laws because they wanted to spend more money or because they wanted to pass unpopular laws.

The actions from the Democrats, on the other hand, have all been ideologically driven. They've increased spending because they think the government SHOULD spend more and they passed Obamacare because they finally had a chance to do it. And now they are doing everything in their power to keep that stuff going.

In any case, excusing the Democrats by saying, "but Republicans did it too", is a fools argument.

Ok... give me the last time that the GOP held the Whitehouse and congress and cut spending.

And the whole "they did it too" isn't the argument at all. That's your argument. I'm not pushing that agenda. I'm simply pointing out that the GOP doesn't give a rats ass about spending. They spend like drunken sailors when they have the chance. They only want to sabatoge spending that doesn't make them look good.

Actually, they are trying to cut spending now...and not because the spending the Democrats make them look bad, but because it's just too much spending.

Anyway, do you think the Democrats should cut spending? Or do you think they should continue with trying to stop the Republicans from cutting spending? I think the Democrats should work with the Republicans to cut spending.

Since 2010 they've been trying to cut spending and they've been trying to get rid of one hell of an unpopular law. Perhaps now would be a good time to vote for them so they can actually DO it.

"Every since they lost control of the check book, they've been opposed to writing checks. You know, just like always."

They do this every time. They're only opposed to spending when they aren't the ones doing it.

I'm more in favor of growing our way out of debt because Ive not seen anyone cut there way out of it. But yes, there are definite cuts that can be made. Close most overseas military bases bring them home. Military spending then would be less on base maintenance and the spending that is done would benefit local communities here instead of there. That'd be a great start.

This is a temper tantrum about spending when they really don't care. The GOP railed against SS when it came out and now they act like they embrace it (while praying to privatize it). They GOP railed against Medicare when it came out and now they pretend to embrace it (while praying to privatize it). Now with Obamacare they are railing against it, it will be like by the people in a few years and the GOP will again pretend to embrace it while continuing the shooting of holes in it.

This is simply history repeating itself. They do not care about the money. They care about party preservation first and foremost if not as their only thing.

Typical liberal thinking...when in doubt, cut military spending.

Republicans don't embrace SS or Medicare, but they recognize that those things have been around for so long that it is impossible to end them...especially cold turkey. With Obamacare, there is still time to stop it so it doesn't do similar damage to our country that those other liberal programs have done.

True. It was a different GOP.

Back then, the republicans all wanted to increase spending and the size of govt

As I said...different times, different circumstances. But I don't think they really WANTED to increase those things...I think they felt the need to do it.

Do Democrats feel the same? I don't think so. I think they want to do those things. They always have.

I agree. It's a completely different circumstance. Back then we had a GOP that was all about increasing spending and the size of govt. Unlike back then, the current GOP constantly talks about how we have to cut spending and the size of govt.

And they mean it!!

So far so good. Spending is flat. But you dodged the question. How else are Republicans supposed to control the democrats who are far worse?

The Democrats won a majority because the American people wanted them to control the Republicans, who made an absolute disaster of the federal government when they were in power. So, no, the minority isn't supposed to be in charge. When you lose, you lose. And you have to deal with the fact that you lost. Try to gain advantage where you can, but if you do it by throwing a temper tantrum every time you don't get your way, you can expect to remain the minority party for at least another election cycle.

Republicans won a majority twice now. So until Democrats win the House, you have to deal with it.

1994 and 2010 come to mind.

Conveniently at those times it was a Dem president proposing the budgets. Which is the real reason the GOP was bitching about spending. Like I said, when the GOP is in control, sitting in the whitehouse and is proposing budgets they can't get enough big government growth and spending.

Lying hypocrits are lying hypocrite. Nothing more.

Now you're just giving up

LOL!!

Not giving up.

Back in the day, when one is experiencing a broken record, one didn't keep listening to it. Rather they tossed the record in the trash.

And yet, the GOP keeps making the same promises, and keeps breaking them and you keep believing them

It's like the battered wives who stay with their abuser saying "He's changed. I can tell"

And when Democrats are in control its worse. So stop voting for either of them.

Yes, until the Republicans are swept out, we have to deal with their tantrums. I don't doubt that. But, now, the rest of America also doesn't doubt that. The question was, why did this hurt the GOP. You've basically answered it, yourself: Because, until we get them out of power, we have to deal with this kind of crap. That's why.

So long as you get it now, that you have to deal with till then. You cant just say "we won, deal with it" because you didn't win. Now that weve established that both sides hold power, how are you going to deal with it to get what you want?

70% of spending is social programs. Democrat priorities.

Perhaps you mean Democratic priorities?

Still doesn't make your point that Dems outspend Repubs. Repubs spend on these social programs as well. I don't see them running against these programs. Basically they run saying they are for them but then try their best to shoot holes in SS and Medicare/Medicaid. I just wish your repub buddies would run on what they really stand for. Privatizing these social programs. Then without all the covert lying they could stand outright for this and of course fail to win any elections. But alas, they will lie and still run saying they are for these programs.

I think it does make my point. Obamacare is the latest example, created during a time when democrats controlled congress and the presidency, with a 100bn a year cost and growing. And will never end. I have no problem with your point that Republicans are also bad. Democrats are simply worse. And I don't vote for either of them. Why do you?
