I think it is understandable for a child that age to potentially suspect that they might be.

However, it seems obvious that their determination at 3 years of age is subject to change. You used a specific word: Know, which i feel makes the response rather confidently seated in the 'No' category.

I wonder if part of the problem of claiming that children are transgendered comes from their preferences. While a child may or (more likely) may not be able to determine their own gender/sexual identity, they do know what they like and what they want to do.

So if a girl is very interested in traditionally boyish things (sports, rough play, climbing trees, etc) or a boy is very keen on traditionally girl activities (gymnastics, dance, home and hearth play), is it really transgender, or simply a parent who doesn't understand that children like what they like and that it may have little to no impact on what they will eventually identify themselves as later on in life?

I won't say it can't happen, but will note that it is unlikely. However, the proof and truth will not be revealed for several years to come. Even if outside influences (not necessarily intentional ones) are causing this child to think that he is actually a she, if it is not truly the case, then it will not last into or much through adulthood. As long as mom is not contemplating hormones or surgery until the child is 18, or at least shows that they can think responsibly, let the child ride it out.

I think a 3 year old certainly can believe that they are not "right" in which sex they are viewed as. David Reimer claimed to know that there was something not right about being made to be a girl for most of his life. He said he didn't feel comfortable as a girl at all. Most people don't themselves remember being 3 and most parents would likely disregard a child who claimed they weren't the right gender at that age.

I'd say most children who say something like "look mommy, I'm a girl" are not trying to express transgenderism. But when a child is truly depressed but then this changes when they are allowed to dress and act and be referred to as the other gender, and maintain this for years, that they are likely transgender. They shouldn't face what this family faced, even if it turns out that in 5-10 years that Trinity starts changing her mind that she really should be Xavier and a he. I doubt this would happen from reading this story. I also think it is wrong for anyone to claim the mother is influencing this child without any evidence of such influence. It doesn't sound as if they are physically switching Trinity over to a girl just yet, even as a teenager, at least not anything that isn't reversible (her family is fighting for her to be given hormone blockers).

I simply don't see any harm from treating her as she wants to be treated, as Trinity rather than Xavier, as a girl rather than a boy.

No way.
Children are just children. They may have arbitrary preferences and interests, and that's beautiful enough in itself. They grow up too soon, just enjoy it as long as it lasts and stop with the projections and burdens.
I view them as 'genderless'.
