Who else can't wait until NASA is killed (metaphorically, of course) and the first space race WITHIN a country commences?

Boeing vs. Lockheed.

Gonna be awesome. Will lead to far more efficienct practices, better/quicker technological innovations, and relieve the taxpayers of a pretty sizeable onus.

I would love to see a privatization of space travel. However, I still think NASA has importance. Not everything regarding space is of commercial value or gives us profit. For instance, studying far away planets and constellations/far away galaxies. Private companies won't invest in research that doesn't yield a profit greater than their investment, this is where we should have NASA as a government funded space agency.

I dont believe this to be true, companies tend to withhold advances for their own financial gain.

I mean look at all the advances from world war 2 we got from all that government research ;)

Technically, it's all private research. Considering, of course, that all the money was from private hands even if, at one point, the government took its skim.

I want NASA to be axed, and a regulatory agency put in its place.

I agree. One example would be the human genome project. One company started sequencing the human genome separate from the governments project. Truthfully they had a more efficient way to sequence the genome in a much faster time, but their goal was to patent and not publicly release the human genome. In the end the government worked with them and all content became public (as it should be). If the genome was patented and kept secret then research wouldn't be able to advance as it has been. Plus research would cost more if they had to pay the company to have access to genomic sequences of interest.

False. Just look at the athletic apparel industry. Kevin Plank forced Nike to start making Under Armour tyoe shirts.

That's just one minor example of the benefits of capitalism. The incentive to get ahead and sell more than the competition will always be there.

Holding back innovations would be asinine.

Hold the phone. You're comparing under armour to... space travel

I think there's a beauty to the fact that the Space Program, the next frontier, is in the hands of the people essentially. It's not some CEO's payroll. Yeah sure it costs alot, and we should sort ourselves out here on the Earth before we worry about other planets. But I want a space program in the hands of our elected officials, not some profit company.

Considering if profit companies stopped making profits and if a CEO's payroll became a welfare'roll, then NASA would stop making space flight possible. I can only conclude that by "the people" you actually mean profits companies and CEO payrolls.

It will make Titusville Florida a ghost town and ruin the local economy even further. As usual Obama has not thought how to do it in a way that will not kill the middle class. This area will become a poverty slum. Thanks Obama once again you have no plans and care nothing about the consequences of your actions and policies

Forgot to mention the possibility of Richard Branson and Bill Gates coming into the fold.

Would be epic.

Gates? Epically bad. Sure way to kill NASA is to make all the space shuttle flights run Windowz. That'll ground them for good.

And on the other hand, using a Mac-based OS would double the cost and cause the spaceships AI to start acting excessively stuck-up.

Linux anyone?

Space exploration right now does not need much in the way of governmental support. Commercial industry can get things to orbit, and traveling to Mars or the Moon does not hold any value currently for a manned mission

The government should focus its reasources on finding a new propulsion system, one that is faster and more efficient. Once that is done then a government funded trip to mars might be in order

Why axe NASA? Space isn't their only game. They do all kinds of important research and they do it very well.

There's a lot of money to be made in space. Satellites make money and manned missions to other planets could be a good investment in the not too distant future (the soonest NASA would be able to take us to Mars isn't anytime soon either).Personally, I think that NASA should back out slowly, helping out private sector at first and slowly phasing out.

So you like make work programs when Obama's gonna axe them? Besides, I'm sure that any private sector space travel company and many, many others would love to have NASA staff with them.

I would like to see more private enterprise involvement in space exploration and development, but like many here I still think NASA has its place.

Someone has to do the "pure research" with no immediate profit-motive in sight, to lay the groundwork for later enterpreneurs.

as someone who is originally from Huntsville Alabama:

:D bring it on.

no they don't. they don't even perform their secondary mission (explore the earth from space) well. on basic climate data, for example, they front up admit that the now-discredited "value added data" that has been "managed" to "provide a nice little story" and "hide the decline" is better than their own.

I don't think NASA should get rid of the Space Shuttle without first having a replacement. As far as privatization goes, a private company made the Shuttle in the first place [Rockwell]. That should continue.

If money is a problem how about getting some sponsors :)

How about planning so it is not a financial catastrophe to communities. I have no problem getting rid of it in a correct manner that does not destroy whole communities
