Maher:

I have to cite a survey that was in The New York Times, which is a liberal paper so they weren't looking for this answer . . . The question was, ‘What do you think the chances are that you would have to go to the hospital if you got COVID?’ And Democrats thought that was way higher than Republicans.

41% of Democrats . . . and the answer is between one and five percent . . . 41% of Democrats thought it was over 50% . . . another 28% thought it was 20-49%.

So 70% of Democrats thought it was way, way, way higher than it really was. (raises finger) Liberal media has to take a little responsibility for that. For scaring the sh** out of people.

The reason why I’m bringing this up is . . . it’s much harder for every touring act to sell tickets in blue states. They’re afraid to go out of the house. In red states, it’s good to go.

. . .

Enjoy. Embrace life.

Wise words. I disagree with Maher on a lot of things. But I respect that he - like me - decides his opinion on each issue one-by-one rather than wait to be told by ideologues on either side what the "correct" position is.

So there are democrats ignorant about virology too.

I saw this myself, spent too.much time calming people down who were WAY too scared. And i'm an asthmatic with type two diabetes.

But I also saw people who weren't scared enough. Saw a bunch of them catch it and get quite sick.

Unfortunately people are stupid overall. So people oversell things in the hopes it will get their attention. Which erodes trust over time.

"Person of fame agrees with me this once, I feel I need to talk about it."
"Person of fame shit in the same toilet I did once."

Same.

Wait, I think I figured out what he is saying with his broken speech.

First off, I would dispute that only 1% go to the hospital. If that was teh wording used, "go to the hospital" it is not 1%. Where did he get this number?

I know lots of folks that went to the hospital for Covid. You have to, at least around here, for monochromal therapy which is pretty common for all folks my age at the first sign.

BTW, Maher is a little punk who was never funny. I never met him but we had to have crossed paths as kids. He is stereotypical of the area from which he is from.

Lots of people who didn't fear are in hospitals wishing the hell that they had stayed home. People wouldn't be a little afraid to go out if the other assholes would be vaccinated.
One other thing that should be mentioned. This is not your father's flu. This MF can do a lot of damage to one's organs, so much so that you'll-never-be-the-same. Oh, you'll think that everything is fine after you leave the hospital until 10 years later you'll feel like you've aged 30 years. The latest on covid is> Guess what?..you've just shortened your life by 10-15 percent.
Congratulations.

I'm with you. He is often a problem propagating misinformation. This is a pleasant surprise.

LOL...

Thing is, Mahr is normally one of the rabble-rousers, and now he is pointing it out.

We had a family of 5 come through the ER at 3 a.m. on a Sunday morning for "Covid". They were upset because they found out they had a "close exposure" to Covid at a birthday party. Why this became a critical issue at 3 a.m. is a mystery. No symptoms in any of the family members. That was 5 ER room slots, 5 very unnecessary Covid tests, and 5 very unnecessary medical bills. Kicker was - the birthday party they had attended was on that Saturday. Things that make you go .... huh?

What we see more than Covid cases are anxiety disorders, panic attacks, and suicide attempts. All of them worked up into a frenzy by the gloom and doom - the sky is falling - the world is coming to an end - constant media barrage of click bait headline hyperbole.

How's YOUR comedy career going? His is going great! Seems like as he banks his millions from his long-running HBO show and his standup gigs, I'm sure he's very "concerned" about your opinion. :)

Every other ER I know of would have prescreened and hopefully educated. Why did your ER allow them in? Why would your ER allow for them to get to an ER room?

They should have been given info on testing protocol and sheltering and when to seek help.

Life would be so much better if the media was a little less interested in spreading fear.
I suggest life would be much better if certain segments of the media quit lying about the disease and stopped spreading disinformation. If people are scared of the virus they should be. Frankly the idea of an avoidable premature death scares me too, which is why I take precautions-unlike the idiot anti-vaxxers who are inviting sickness and possible death for themselves and others through their selfish irresponsibility.

Interesting points Maher made, but two things:
  • Your assessment of COVID risk can be based on where you live; if it's an urban center and you still remember the constant sound of ambulances, know that most places you go will feature large crowds, your assessment will be different than if you live in a less densely populated area.
  • The point about ticket sales is odd because he's critiqued Trump rallies (and Trump himself) as being super spreaders, and one can argue the risk assessment by those in red states are likely similar to the one made in attending rallies etc. At the same time I wonder how many GOP supporters are actually going to his shows even in red states.

He seems to have forgotten his own stance before the last presidential election where he kept telling people trump is going to win again.

So your ER turns people away on a routine basis? We don't have enough Doctors to station one out in the waiting room to make medical decisions like that.

No doubt that Maher is concerned about ticket sales now that he's going on tour.

Interesting that he's selling plenty of tickets in red states but not blue. It's going to be the libetals in those red states buying the tickets. Yeah we have liberals in Texas but the are not so chicken hearted as CA liberals.

Texas liberals support mandatory masking and vaccination but the don't hide at home until that happens.

Turn away?
It is called triage.
The triage nurse should get the info and give them appropriate info.
5 ER beds????
For totally asymptomatic people exposed to Covid VERY recently?
I don't buy it.
I know of no ER that would allow totally asymptomatic people to take up 5 ER beds. It is unethical.
You get past the ER doors to a bed with symptoms.
They came asymptomatic to the ER. 1 and a half years in, I am surprised you don't have protocols. Are you in an area that has never seen covid?

While true, that is not quite the point Bill Maher was trying to make.

Yes Maher was going after liberal media for creating an environment of fear and perhaps overreaction, of the stats of 'the chances you have to go to the hospital for catching covid' is one thing and the overwhelming percentage of liberals think it is much much higher that is a problem.

That does not get the right leaning media off the hook for disinformation about animal dewormer medication, or disinformation about masks and vaccines, or any number of other conspiracy theory level nonsense trying to convince the right there is no pandemic and there is no risk.

At no time did Maher minimize the over 600,000 deaths and over 41 million reported cases of Covid.

What he specifically said, that you ignored, was the following...

"Bottom line is, we know if you are vaccinated then you almost never die from it" then he went on to say "I am for whatever is getting America back to where I can see the James Bond movie in the theater." Maher talked about masks, protocols, vaccinated status, and everything they were doing. All the things Republicans are against.

While he does lean towards comedy to make his points, the very next subject they spoke about is "half the country hating him one week, with the other half hating him the next."

This is why, he calls out the bullshit from both sides making him a permanent enemy from the right and an part time enemy from the left.

It is why FoxNews and others quote him (partially if not incorrectly on occasion) only when convenient as a stab on the left, and why the left no longer welcomes him. He refuses to be monolithic and he purposefully appeals to rational thought when the extreme of either side discards that very principle to make a very lazy point.

Like the next segment they spoke about, with two national anthems and why it is a stupid idea.

At least be honest about this, Maher is. And modern liberalism and modern conservatism cannot stand that.

Yep, and he complained about not being able to go on tour earlier through the pandemic as well. His monologues often spoke about missing crowds, shows etc.

I don't think of it in those terms, but rather what risks you're willing to take for what you get in return; going to a sold out show for entrainment can be low on someone's list. One of the things that's changed for me as a result of the pandemic is weeding out activities I didn't miss once they were gone. I tend to favor doing things outdoors anyway, so the changes throughout the pandemic impacted me less than others I know.

I used to watch Politically Incorrect as well, and remember him attacking ideas he disagreed with regardless of which political side was pitching them. He's made more enemies on the left now because politics has become so entrenched in picking a side rather than the merits of the ideas being promoted.

There are times I agree with Maher, other times I do not.

Lately it is more often I find myself in the former of the two, because of what you point out in him not putting up with the nonsense of either extreme (that I would argue is doing all the talking these days.)

What it shows is Maher is perhaps the poster child example as to why modern liberalism, especially over the last decade (give or take,) has marched the intentions and origins for liberalism in this nation in the first place into an awful us vs. them 'woke' cancel culture and security blanket corner.

Maher calls that out, and it is refreshing to see him point out how lazy modern liberalism has become as well as seem him more harshly and rightfully so go after the far right too.
