Americans were notified by the US Embassy to leave the country ASAP on May 15th. That was over 3 months ago. There were no terrorists blocking them for 2 and 1/2 months.

1) The process of withdrawing American civilian government employees in advance of the military withdrawal would have been seen as a signal that we had no confidence in the Afghan military and the Afghan government. Following the collapse, it would have been singled out as "Biden's catastrophic miscalculation" that caused the collapse. Which we know now it wouldn't have been.

2) We can't order American civilians who are not government employees out of countries. Besides, every year we see Americans refusing to evacuate in the face of advancing hurricanes. People do what they want to do. Look at the idiots not getting vaccinated.

3) Few people thought this evacuation would be necessary at all. Everyone believed that if there was a collapse, it would be gradual, allowing continual assessments of who needs to be evacuated when. This was a complete surprise. And yet despite the surprise we've evacuated a record number of people in record time.
