Give me a F-in' break man.

By calling 311, residents in Fort Wayne, Ind., who need their furnace fixed, roof repaired or other retrofits now have access to home improvement grants and loans. On April 5, the city announced $700,000 in federal funds for up to 100 lucky homeowners, including seniors and individuals with disabilities, who need help with interior and exterior home repairs.
For the first time, the city's 311 call center will be used to pre-qualify applicants starting April 7, when the program opens. It's a first come, first serve basis because when 90 to 100 appointments have been made, city officials said, the programs will close. Calls will be accepted after 8 a.m. and operators will ask homeowners several questions to help determine eligibility and will set appointment times with loan specialists.

What the hell?

Why would they do that if only 100 people can be helped?

sounds like a responsible, even noble use of money to me. good for them.

I'm starting to suspect that you're just a troll. Who would support this nonsense?

lessee. the gummint in DC game the local gummint some money which the local gummint used to help the old and sick repair their homes.

You do not think that that is a good idea? I am not troll. Nor am I a greedy, selfish curmudgeon.

But this is money going back to the people!

No, it's going from ONE group of people, to another. This is done by FORCE (taxes) and with little say from the people the money is taken from.

I.E. people like YOU don't believe wage earners EARN their money, they work hard and are "allowed" to keep a portion of the money they "earned". Government first, people second.

It could of gone to more productive things like repairing a road, school, bridge etc.

Instead we have it going to non productive things like fixing private residences.
The worst of it is though, that it isn't targeting the most damaged homes in need, it's a lottery.

Fail policy is fail. :thumbdown

yeah... that woulda been good too.

we would seem to have very different definitions of 'productive'.

if you insist. call me cynical if you like, but life is a crapshoot. you toss the dice and pray.

Yeah, instead of money going to people who earn it, we should set up a lottery because that's so much better.

Hate to say it but fixing the homes of old people is probably the least productive thing you can do with tax dollars.

They are going to die soon and will not generate much additional utility from that house.

It could of targeted the homes with chronically ill children, I would of still disagreed but at least the most needy would have gotten it.

we ARE using different definitions... yours is purely economic and based upon profitable return. Mine is rather simpler - producing, generating what was not there before. I do not think that taxes need produce profit. Providing for the well-being of citizens is productive in my meaning.

It's not for profit but for utility.

A 90 year old lady won't be around much longer no matter how much you fix her house.

A young family with children would benefit many times over by having a repaired home.

i suppose so.

The money should be refunded equally to those who pay property taxes, in the form of a one time reduction on their next payment........;)
