Background Checks

What do you suggest as an alternative?
People die for all kind of reasons. In fact everybody dies. Support something that will actually make a difference like education.

How many shootings do gun control advocates reckon will be prevented every year if we pass a federal law requiring background checks for all firearm sales, and based on what data?

California has 100% background checks.... We've stopped all shootings....

Oh, wait.

Really, not saying you're wrong. But are there states where you HAVE to be sa resident of that state to buy a gun ?
If you purchase a gun out of the state you reside in it must go through a FFL to be legal. So in your scenario of someone just driving to another state to get around a UBC requirement they are breaking the law.

A gun owner moving to California must register as well.

I'm pretty sure Federal law prohibits buying a firearm out of state and bringing it into your own state, unless you buy it from a licensed dealer, or to sell to someone you know or have reason to believe is not from your state.

Have you actually bought a gun? Do it. You can always turn it into the police.

I'm pretty sure Federal law prohibits selling a firearm directly to someone you know to be from out of state. Unfortunately, it doesn't require the seller to check ID.
Maybe a private sale but not an FFL.

Federal laws

1) a non licensed individual may buy rifles, shotguns and handguns from other unlicensed individuals ONLY if both reside in the same state

2) a non licensed individual can buy long arms from a licensed individual whose place of business is in the same state as the buyer or an adjacent state

3) a non licensed individual cannot buy a handgun from a dealer who does not operate or hold a license in his state

There's a small caveat, there being a "knows or has reason to believe" element to at least some of those laws, and no duty to investigate (e.g. by checking ID).

Don't I know it. If you're going to move to CA, don't. But if you're still going to move to CA, be sure to buy a bag of off-roster pistols before you do. It's legal, and fun.

Enforce the laws we have.

most criminals are getting guns from people who already know they are mopes

Education. Ok. What education? Who will implement it? Who will the educators be? You really have no clue about what you're talking about, do you?

Why do I have to suggest an alternative? I'm not terribly worried about getting murdered.
Good! Then you don't need to participate in this discussion. Like most gun enthusiasts, you value your little hobby/gun fetish more than other people's lives.

So in a state that doesn't require a UBC, if the buyer is from out of state it does ?

Yes. The only "problem" is that Federal law does require the seller to check ID. So let's pass a law requiring private sellers to check ID, and be done with it. Then states can regulate however they like, within the confines of the 2nd.

In fact, we could get rid of ALL the other federal gun laws if we do this.
