An Applebee's waitress who posted a receipt with a note from a pastor complaining about the automatic gratuity added to the bill on the Internet was fired on Wednesday after the pastor complained to her manager.
Chelsea Welch, the waitress, wrote in an email to Yahoo News that the pastor (who has since been identified as Alois Bell) told Welch's manager at the St. Louis-area Applebee's that the ensuing firestorm had "ruined" her reputation.
"I give God 10%," Bell wrote on the receipt, scratching out the automatic tip and scribbling in an emphatic "0" where the additional tip would be. "Why do you get 18?" (There were more than eight people in Bell's party, triggering the auto-tip.)
Auto tip policy kicks in when party is above 8 people. On a bill of 34 bucks, what did they eat? One beer a piece?
Do you think the waitress should have been fired.
Applebee

Do you think the pastor was a jerk? YEP absolutely
Do you think the waitress should have been fired. Tough call, depends on the employee handbook, i wouldnt have fired her but at the same time not sure i can point to anything saying she shouldnt have been fired.
I would have suspended her and thats it.
Yes, she should have been fired as she posted personal information about a customer that was only obtained by being at work.
There are similar privacy policies with companies about posting personal information about customers.
I'm torn....posting someone's information online isn't cool...but the pastor was a corncob.
I sort of agree, thats why i said i cant argue against the firing but in reality what personal info did she post?
if it was only the pic(not sure if thats all it was), thats not to personal
The picture had his signature and he has since been harrassed on facebook and twitter if I remember correctly.
yes it did but an unreadable first name and only readable last name so unless theres more info than that the only people that could put two and two together are the people that were with him.
but again i totally agree if there was very specific and direct info posted, simply cant do that
Well, I don't eat at Applebees, but I will redouble my efforts by way of avoiding the place.
I own my own business and that business deals with the public, but when that public acts like a complete jerk, I DON'T leave my employees hanging out to dry. I back them up, instead.
Have I mentioned that I have had the same employees for the last 7 years?
Thats the thing though what info, a scribbled first name and readable last name.
Has anybody found something else posted or did i miss anything else.
Maybe the watress described the patron or something also.
In this particular instance the Pastor knowingly acted like a jerk but you kind of need policies at a chain resturaunt that can be applied to all employees. You don't want a Supervisor making a decision on if it's too much customer information, if the posting was warranted etc.
Honestly I'm not very sympathetic with the pastor AT ALL! The fact she even called the corporate yelling at them to fire EVERYBODY at the resturaunt shows the fact she's not sorry for what she did just that everybody else knows about it. Definately a certifiable douchebag. At the same time...waitress should of thought it out more when she posted things on the intrawebs.
actual it was
first name is unreadable, last name is clearly bell the picture shows thatView attachment 67141749
agreed
im just sticking to my guns on this one though unless it came from a very serious legal suggestion to do so or i had to because cooperate made me, i keep her and only suspended her to make it look good.
ANd of course if she clearly violated a policy then she'd have to be punished in what ever way the policy said.
Again, the information is there that somebody looked it up and harrased her on facebook and twitter. So, there is enough there that the waitress should not have posted it.
Also, we do not know if this was the first infraction that the waitress did. She could have done other stuff and this just was the final straw, we don't know.
the waitress did everything right
EXCEPT post the scribbled, near illegible signature of snarky pastor on the net
where the pastor was then identified and exposed - and properly embarrassed
so, the employer had to fire the waitress
and for that i will have to avoid applebees (thank goodness cracker barrel no longer discriminates against gays, because i hated being unable to eat there ... ignoring applebees will be easy by comparison)
but this "Christian" who holds herself out to be a minister
this pastor who insisted that the restaurant manager and the waitress be fired
this pastor who wrote the snarky 10%/18% note intending it to be read
and then became upset when her embarrassing words and actions reached an unexpectedly larger viewership
she needs to take off her WWJD bracelet and go into hiding
