Another School Shooting

its silly to suggest that teaching about the Bible, will automatically make one a peaceful, kind, and gentle soul.

If anyone had actually said that, you might have a point.

There is so much imbedded violence in our culture. I'm not talking about from the media or video games, but from the regular injustices that every person faces. It's the lack of compassion, the degradation of sense of community, the way the government abuses their powers, the way corporates gouge us and don't pay enough for people to live on. Children become violent because their parents feel violent, and both are a production of our country devolving.

If our society cultivated compassion and made that the primary focus - of business, of voting for political office, of our biggest issues - children would not be shooting up their classmates or suffer horrible bullying and ostracization.

How did this high school student end up with a gun in school? I'm not a huge supporter of gun control but this is absurd! How many more of our youth need to die before something happens?

I am concerned their is going to be more. More laws by our local/State/Federal govt. is not the answer. We as a country need to take a hard look at the family structure and ask ourselves, our parents providing the guidance to their children that is necessary for them to grow up and be good citizens. I realize some kids turn out bad despite good parents. However, I feel many of these kids may not have received proper education at home regarding values.

I don't understand. In my day, the worst I worries about were knives. What happens to make a HS student into a mass murderer?
I'm not sure either. I think it's a a multitude of factors, the Colorado shooters were outcasts, bullied, immoral, and sociopathic. This kid may have been pushed too far and lashed out in desperation, he could have had violent tendancies, not sure. I remember when we just did what we had to do when I went to school, we avoided those that bullied and just let things roll till better times came. We fought, but we did it with our hands.

This isn't just a school issue though. I try to mind my own business and stay civil when I go out because it's always the little idiot with a loud mouth and a gun that tends to be a problem. I even remember one of those little idiots getting arrested in my college days for screaming in public he was going to get his gun, yeah, real smart man throw out threats of violence in a crowded bar and give security/police a reason to detain you.

I dunno, people are crazy.

Yes. It seems that is what happened in this case based on what I have read. This kid was an outcast and was bullied. I also read that the school was told about his tweets and ignored it. Shame on the school system for failing to take those tweets serious. So tragic

I am not saying I approve of what this teen did but it is clear adults failed him and so did his fellowclass mates if they were bullying him.

From what I heard on news reports he was bullied, but that's the extent. No specific bullying behaviors were cited so the severity of the abuses he suffered is possibly unknown at this point.

This NEVER happened until Columbine. Now it's like a virus, spreading everywhere.
There were others before Columbine, that's just the one that people really remember. There was a nasty one in 1997 in Pearl Mississippi and many prior went unnoticed by the national media because they weren't multiple shootings. Columbine was just the worst because it was premeditated and involved two really sick little bastards, bombs, and a very high casualty count.

Heck, the way things are these days, being bullied may simply mean that other kids said he looked funny. If bullying were really the problem, we would have had at least a shooting per day when I was in high school.

Don't bring religion into this. Religion has nothing to do with parenting abilities and discipline.
Any moral teaching will do. If nothing else the nuclear family is at best a novelty these days. My folks would watch programming with me and explain that the person "killed" during the show was an actor and they were okay, but it doesn't work that way in the real world. We went from the family eating dinner together, working together, playing sports together to families where a kid is alone in a room for hours with suspect entertainment and almost no parental involvement.

It is fear parenting and-to me-not a healthy way to parent. There is also guilt involved when raising a child this way as in if they do something wrong Sky Papa will be pissed. Not to mention the fear of going straight to burn in hell forever and ever. Yep. That sure may work in some cases but think of the worry and fear that child must live with always worried god is watching their every move. This can backfire too and make a kid run away from Christian faith as soon as they are old enough to start thinking for themselves and questioning stuff. Which is healthy. Just my thoughts and no disrespect.

Junior high and high school were pure hell for me, to this day I haven't killed anyone. When I got to college it was a new ballgame and they were terriffic years, kids need to understand that things don't stay the same, they have choices, and life can get better given time if you'll let it.

They also need to understand that kids who are bullies are really just miserable kids who are envious, otherwise, they wouldn't have a need to make someone else miserable. When I was a kid, there were plenty of bullies, but we pretty much just ignored their sorry asses. If you go through life taking everything to heart, you'll never find any peace or happiness.

Wish I could like that more than once. As well the bully tends to be the biggest coward, the big problem is the modern bully tends to recruit, heaven forbid the cowards have to answer for their actions by getting a nice well rounded ass kicking.

For some people, guilt is the only thing that keeps them from screwing up their lives. Unfortunate, but true.

That's okay to rebel and run away. At least they are thinking about what they've been taught. I've seen plenty of people rebel against their childhood religion, but for the most part, the core values remain intact. That is what is important.

Oh, like attracts like. The biggest bullies I have ever seen are old farts on message boards. MEAN and hypocritical old farts. They live for the past, never getting over a slight, always finding an excuse for being assholes and they just love the feeling of power when they have backup for their assinine pileons for perceived slights while always conveniently forgetting what they said or did that garnered them getting exactly what they dished out by the wrong victim.

Arggg. Sorry. Minor rant.

Cyber bullying is a huge topic right now, I'd say it kinda fits. I remember a couple of teens killing themselves over just that issue, the sick thing is the adult PARENT was in on it. GRRRRRR!

So he should be killed within a year by the state?
(From Thread: On death row, by mistake (or worse))

and

You are giving these ego tripping killers way toooooooo much credit. The thing they do not want the most? Is the thing that they did to other humans: DEATH.

You'd be surprised at how disgusting adults are that should know better. I mean, really.

Then again, I'm really really trying not to light up right now. I'm on my 2nd day of no cig. So taking on a bunch of old nasty assed bitter skanks and assholes is not good for me. Yet I'm not as in control of myself as I'd like to be and keep looking at their idiocy. I need to dump that link.

Studying "people like this" won't prevent anything. Nutcases just happen to pop off every once in awhile, and you don't typically see it coming until after the fact, when someone says "hmmm- I thought he was acting a little strange lately".........
That's not necessarily true and since it isn't, I'd rather have people to "study" and understand in hopes of understanding the cause of the problem then have only questions.

It will tell us something about him, the individual. It will tell us what was making him tick and making his timed bomb go off. It won't tell us what the kid in the next county is thinking when he becomes irrational and ready to blow a fuse.
How do you know? Presumably people who do the same things, have things in common. If we find the common foundation, then we might be able to address it as a country. There is a chance that we won't be able to prevent anything, but I find it pretty unfortunate and potentially dangerous that people like you attempt to shut down any hope to at least try to prevent these things.

We always talk about what to do about school bullying, but we don't know what to do.

Shooting the unarmed in the back is a terrible, cowardly thing to do, but this kid sent a message to bullies everywhere. Be careful who you pick on.

It didn't? When I was in High School, back around 1980, we had a kid come to school and shoot two others. Afterwards, it was found out that the two who were shot had tortured and harrassed the shooter mercilessly. They had kicked and beaten him to the point that he was sterile. The final event that set it all off was the shooter had worked, saved his money and bought himself a car, the two "victims" destroyed that car. The shooter was not prosecuted, the family was given a new name and moved to an undisclosed city elsewhere in the US. Neither "victim" died in that particular case.

Whether shooting is justified or not, and I cannot comment about the case for this thread, we don't know enough yet, some kids just get pushed too far. Everyone has a breaking point and everyone can be pushed beyond it, what happens when we go beyond is totally unpredictible. At Columbine, there was a long history of abuses and what some may consider torture of the shooters. Was their actions justified because of it, I don't believe they were, but they were pushed beyond their individual tolerences and choose that method to fight back.

It is not guns we need to control or violent video games, these are just convenient targets for those who don't want to address the real problems and come up with real solutions. School shootings happened long before Columbine and happen after, they will continue to happen until we find a way to address and rectify the core causes, or at least somehow stear those pushed to extremes to focus on other solutions.
