Another heart attack in the world of Football

BBC News - Italy footballer Morosini dies after collapse on pitch

this seems to be happening more and more in Football and it brings up the question why? These are young men in great physical condition and yet they are collapsing on the pitch dead, are we pushign the human body too far I wonder?

I've been curious about the frequency of heart attacks and strokes among young athletes in recent years also.

Sports medicine and so forth is constantly looking for new ways to push the "performance envelope" and help athletes surpass what were previously thought to be human limits... like you I speculate that perhaps our high-tech methods of physical conditioning have reached and maybe *surpassed* what the human body is able to handle. We've long known that overtraining can kill you, but in recent years the use of specialized hydration and nutrition products and specialized cool-off equipment to keep you going past normal limits..... maybe it is just a bit more than the human body was meant to handle.

After all, there have to be limits to human performance at some point, maybe we've reached them.

totally agree! You look at football (soccer) for exmaple, over the last 20 years the game has got more phyiscal, faster and players are playing far more games than they were before. They average something like 7 km a game and play pretty much year around. Even in athletic we see records get broken on a constant basis, just look at how many runners do the mile in under 4 mins now, liek you said their has to be a point where our body shuts down!

Good points goshin and I agree with most all...reminds me of Rocky 4 when Lungrin played the Russian...and was scientifically trained...if you remember.

But theres other reasons for the heart attacks and strokes today.....Steroids and General usage drugs...they are great contributors.

I agree with you on the point about Steroids etc but in Soccer Steroids are not really an issue and the players who have had these problems recently have no history of drug abuse or heart problems. Marc Viven Foe was a pro at the top of his game and his heart just stopped just like these other players, something is very wrong with this.

I've been wondering for some time about these "energy drinks" that the young folks chug like it was soda. A lot of them are billed as "herbal" (which doesn't mean 'safe') but others are just super caffinated suger rushes. That reminds me of the Fen-fen herbal class-action suit from a few years ago, where a lot of people suffered heart damage from the herbal concoxion (often through overuse).

Been thinking for some time that excessive consumption of "energy drinks" was going to lead to heart problems, I wonder if this is an indicator? Pure speculation on my part...

When you see your co-workers chugging down those giant cans of Red bull at 9am it def makes you think. Saw an advert recently where a US womens soccer player comments that the other team were tired and that they were only drinking water which gave her an advantage because she was drinking gatorade....

I agree theres something mysterious about it...but no history doesnt mean No drugs for one...and there may be other things they are doing that the public just hasnt become aware of....took 20 yrs or more before the widespread steroid use became common knowledge....there has to be something making these young people in peak condition check out suddenly....

If you lived in fla...you would be inundated with class action lawsuits that are raging against drug makers for causing all kinds of maladies...one right after another on tv...If you or a loved one has taken SUCH AND SUCH medicine and experienced such an such you may be entitled to compensation...call the offices of scum and bloodsucker for a free consultation.

Okay, I doubt stuff like Red Bull, and Monster are as dangerous as Fen-Fen, but yeah they can't be healthy. I remember the first time I had a Red Bull it tasted like piss, but it did it's job, and I kept drinking them, especially after hockey games during high school when I couldn't just go home and crash because I had stuff to do. Well after a few they tasted like delicious candy, and sort of became addicted to them. Stopped cold turkey, and wasn't that hard to quit, but it's not hard to see why people drink them all the time.

Oh...from the title, I though this thread was about football...not that soccer crap.

Don't know nothing about soccer...don't care about soccer...don't care about soccer players who have heart attacks.

I'm out of here.
