Another day, another reason to rant about my country

I don't know why a lot of things start rubbing me the wrong way.

Ever since the USL (social liberal union, an ungodly political alliance between the leftwing social democrats and the solid rightwing national liberals) have gained the majority in Parliament in july 2012 because several democrat-liberals dropped out of Parliament due to popular protests, and then officially won win a resounding majority the Parliamentary elections in late 2012 (so they've been in power for over 1 year now) I had a bad feeling in my stomach. I mean, I didn't think much of the idiots (democrat liberals) who were in power before... but ever since then, I just felt disgusted on all fronts.
And since they became the majority in parliament, they formed the government. But the president, while constitutionally not affiliated with any party, did belong to the democrat liberals.

Anyway. Today is just another example of how messed up the whole affair is and how the current power is still doing politics with the opposition who was in power over ANYTHING and never get down to governing the country. Not governing the country has had some bad results, like, for instance ,Romania is now 2nd in inflation

When even during the height of the recession we weren't in the top 10. Now we are 2nd...

But yesterday another spectacle has happened which really just exploded today. As much as it seems impossible, because earlier this year I lost all faith in the major media outlets, I have now become... well, there isn't really a word for it, with what the media has been up to these past 2 days.

Romania has a 2.5% to 3% gypsy population. Despite international reports and outstanding apologists, there really isn't any form of institutional discrimination or societal discrimination against them in Romania. They have reserved slots in schools and universities which they don't use. They have representation in parliament by default (they don't need to fight for votes or seats, they just have them), and they get preferential welfare based on number of children, which often times are numerous. I mean, I get free education too in public schools but I compete for slots based on tests or grades. Gypsy children got, at my highschool for instance, 2 seats in every classroom for free, they just had to show up. they didn't take them. In universities, they have again, reserved slots, no competition with non-gypsy, just between themselves, and yet, only 10% of the slots reserved for gypsies were occupied in my university when I joined 4 years ago. I also have only 4 years of free college bachelors' education. If I had flunked 1 year, I would have had to pay for it. Gypsies get free university education for unlimited years. And yet people cry about discrimination? yeah, positive discrimination.

And why did I say this? Well yesterday the self-proclaimed gypsy king died. Yes, the gypsy community, in their wisdom, decided it's ok to have, as a representative of the gypsy community, a "gypsy king". He has no authority of course, and is no more a king than King Micheal I of Romania is a king in terms of legal authority, but he is a recognized popular figure. His name? Florin Cioaba.

Yes, the gypsy community decided to name this guy their king. Their representative in the public perspective. He died yesterday, don't ask me how, I don't give a damn. Maybe it's because he was fat, stupid and old. But that's just a guess. Anyway, he's dead. But that's not the story.

The story is that our dear prime minister, who is a social democrat leading the social liberal union, declared yesterday to be a national mourning day. You heard me, a national day to mourn the death of the gypsy king Cioaba. And the whole media is up and about, telling us how amazing the prime minister is, all awaiting for the president to make a comentary, which of course, he did, as well as the other party. Everybody rammed in to get the face time. To get the soundbyte. Omg, the king of the gypsies is dead. oh dear, oh my, who cares... really.. who the hell cares.

I don't. I don't give a damn about that. And it's not an anti-gyspy thing, it's a common sense thing. These assholes in the social liberal union haven't been governing the country for a year now. They've been having political games all year. and the presidential election is in november next year. And they'll keep doing political games. They'll keep fighting for the soundbyte, for the spectacle, for the political struggle. And not give a damn about the country. Not a single one.

Since these guys have been in power Romania has failed twice in our IMF agreements. Now I hate the IMF, but a deal is a deal. And in january this year they told us that over half of the objectives set for 2013 are on the course for failure and in june, they were right. Almost half the points that were supposed to be achieved have been failed and we had to renegociate the agreement. How bad is this? I mean god dammit I am so angry, so angry. Because these guys can't do anything right except political partisan games.

And yet here we are, mid august, talking about self-intitled king cioaba who died. I am so angry. So angry.
Now his son tells us that he owes 350.000 $ to the mobsters or something. Bet he'll want a bailout to save the "gypsy monarchy". Honestly, I am speechless.

I feel sorry for you, having to support a group that contributes nothing to society and just takes welfare and other such government hand-outs.
There is no such thing as a "gypsy monarchy" its yet another fabrication to gain hand-outs.
So the Romanian government prefers the "taker" gypsies to the Romanian tax payers? That's just bad. They get free stuff that could be used for an aspiring non-gypsy child which is empty due to it being reserved for a person who has no interest in taking it.
Why does your country have so many gypsies? That's always fascinated me.

2-3% of the population is gypsy. To put in contrast, we have nearly 8% of the population as Hungarians (magyars), 6% russian and other slavs, 4% germans (swabs), 4% jews and then we have gypsy as the largest minority and around 75% of the population is Romanian.

But they are the only social group that gets disproportionate benefits from the state. Jews don't get special slots in schools. neither do slavs, germans or hungarians. With hungarians it's a special thing, but not the same. They have an extremist separatist political party called the UDMR which aims at creating social disharmony between Romanians and hungarians, but hungarians get no special benefits. Anyway, a story for another time. i may make a rant about this too if a particular trend continues, but it hasn't reached that stage yet.

But the story is not the gypsies. They are who they are and that's that. It's the fact that these people who are now in power, socialists and national liberals, shaking hands over the country, are using every single thing that happens as a political ramp to hype their profile. A car crash? better gain some political points. A murder? better get some political points off of it. A self-proclaimed gypsy king died? Better get some political points out of it. And there is no political capital to be gained from this. From the 2-3% gypsy population, you'd be lucky to find 5-10% who go and vote. They don't vote out of their own desire. they have no reason to go and vote because there are gypsy representatives with right to vote in Parliament. Designated seats, they don't compete in districts for votes like any other member of parliament does.

I am so angry at the government because all it does is politics. All the god damn time. All they want is face time on the media, which now, all of it is favorable to them, and can barely wait for the presidential elections to happen. That's all they care about. Because the president appoints prosecutors and other judicial appointees as well as the heads of national intelligence services. And they want to put a new president, one of them, so that they can have the national services dig up dirt on political adversaries to use in other elections. We just got rid of the stench of communist political police in 2003 when we got rid of Iliescu and the socialists back then only to see that ugly beast appearing on the horizon again, turning it's head and licking it's lips. And now...

Every single thing that can be used as a distraction is used as a distraction. Nevermind that this prime minister announced that he will abandon Romania's objective to join the euro. I don't like the euro or the eurozone. But you don't abandon a project that is considered of national interest and then just let things slide. Oh look, we just gave up. if he were to drop the euro project, at least replace it with something considerably better. Say: ok, we won't pursue the euro, but we will upgrade the national railway service and make it profitable. Or I don't know.. repair healthcare or make education the best it ever was. Put something grand that people will feel inspired to work for.

So you are really annoyed because your government is concentrating on appeasing the non voting gypsies, rather than on the EU, the economy or even infrastructure. Im sure most people would be. Shame really. You government is to focused on party and elections before country.

That's about the jest of it. Only it's not just non-voting gypsies, it's the fact that they are focused on everything that is a distraction. this is just a big distraction and allows people to go all ape-**** crazy with theatricals and make their faces known to the public.

But most people aren't angry. They are annoyed, but they aren't angry. If there is public outrage, is sure isn't felt in the population. Then again, we Romanians are slow to get angry. You can put a lot of extra straws on the romanian camels' back before you break it. The last administration broke it and it got protested out of the majority last year in the summer because it was incompetent. I have to say, it wasn't all incompetent, all bad. It did do a lot of good especially in the first 5-6 years from 2003 to 2008, 2009 and held up their end of the bargain with the population better than those before them. But the recession broke them. they stopped functioning and started adopting bad habbits that were commonplace in the socialists administration up to 2003. So they got ousted.

And they had garnered a lot of hate over 3-4 years. And the people were happy when this ungodly union was formed as a countermeasure and took power. They were happy when the president got suspended and there was a referendum to vote him out of office, which failed. They seem to be happy today because the governing coalition stages political stabs against the presidency. Nothing of substance, just cheap theater to get the masses riled up. And it works for some who look at the media which has only praises of the government and does it's best to conceal it's failures.

Now I never attended political studies but my experience taught me that all politicians are basically hooligans who make up political gangs. And when it's time to split the cheese, they get feisty. Each group wants more for themselves. My hope is that this ungodly coalition breaks as soon as the political pressure of the presidential election starts to really weigh in on them. The figureheads of each political party will tear each other apart like rabid animals. Hopefully it will be enough to both break the coalition, and have a new round of parliamentary elections, and remove the wool over the eyes of the people. Realize that they voted idiots in office and maybe, just maybe, we, the people, will do something in our interest and vote them all out of office. But one can dream...

If all that fails, well, there's always the traditional Romanian way of handling thieves, traitors or incompetents.

He managed to clean the country up rather nicely. I'd say another round is long overdue.

So basically your government needs to man up and tackle the problems head on rather than wasting time and money on little side issues to divert attention away from the major problems facing Romania. Sounds kinda familiar with a little peninsular on the south west of Europe that I know of... :lol:

The gypsy population has remained pretty stable over the past 20 years. It's not just this census that puts it at these levels, it's prior census's too. They have more children than any other ethnicity has, but they don't end up well. This guy, Cioaba, died at 54 and he never had to do a hard job in his life. Do you know how rare that is? Miners in Romania live longer than that and they have a whole bunch of health risks. Average life expectancy in Romania is, again, depending on the polls, anywhere from 74 to 78. Yet for gypsies, is much lower due to a deadly combo of bad cultural diet and healthcare traditions, endemic cultural anti-educational behavior and the general nomadic lifestyle that some gypsies still carry today. Only instead of being nomadic like, you know, normally, this is nomadic in the sense that they go to France to beg for a few months, during the tourist season until they get 300euros to go home. then they go to Italy during the winter and the UK during the Olympics... and come home, spend the huge piles of money they made on building palaces and buying SUVs, spend a few months home and then the cycle begins again. These sort of gypsies have entitled themselves "tigani domnesti", something like, aristocratic gypsies. Cioaba was one of them.

I do admire their desire to see the world. A gypsy kid from such a entrepreneurial family must have seen more countries by the time he's 12 then I have until now. I mean, I've seen 4-5 countries, depending on how you count. A gypsy kid from such a family would see as many on their way to France.
Ofc, I'm a Romanian, not a gypsy, so I decided to get an education and you know... if I ever go to another country to work it will be on a contract with a company or to visit. I'm just stupid that way. No entrepreneurial sense.

So tomorrow, the fatso, the "international king of gypsies" , is going to be burried. And apparently, and I kid you not, there will be a succession ceremony and his son, Dorin Cioaba, will be the king. And they will actually say: The king is dead, long live the king! ; after the burial. I kid you not.

Now this would be fine you know, if they were actual royalty. I mean, if there actually was a lineage of royalty. But this title of "king of gypsies" has only existed since 97. Not 1097, or 1197 or anything. Since 1997. It's made up. This guy, Florin Cioaba, self-proclaimed himself and gained a place in the International Gypsy Union (which is a real institution) to you know, be part of it and made it some kind of an official title there. I thought it was a very elaborate and poor taste "nickname" of sorts but no, it's a real thing. And there is a real succession law for it. Mind = blown.

Now I already said that the king of gyspies died at 54 because he was too fat and stupid at a hospital in Turkey. The doctors may have saved him from his fatness if they had the time but there is no salvation from stupidity. This is his son:

Look at him. Look at his fat face. He's bound for a heart attack any day now. If the fatness won't kill him, the stupidity will surely cause him a stroke. Listening to him for 2min while I was searching for the remote nearly caused me to go blind because of all the stupidity.

Anyway. I think it's disgraceful. I think it's stupid. And I'm generally appaled. There will be international attendance to the funeral. Don't ask me who, I didn't stick around to find out. But yeah. Anyway, this is all I could think about.

Timurids, ottomans, mongols, general hordes that came in from asia. But yes, Turkey was a general avenue for gypsies to come into Europe. A lot of gypsies were pushed out of turkish lands, expelled, because either they weren't muslims or were foreigners. this was particularly true after Timur Lenk came into town.

No. They're called gypsies or roma people. or rroma. Not roman. Romans were the people of the Roman empire, of which many latin and non latin nations are descendants of.

Also, medusa, I wouldn't be so cocky if I were you. Unlike in Europe, where we identify the gypsies are being an ethnicity and grant them special privileges to go with their minority status and try and help them, in turkey you don't even recognize them. Just to express a bit more of my anger. We, Romanians, have king and a royal dynasty of whom King Micheal I is the "head" as it were. But he has no legal authority because we are a republic. It's not quite kissing gypsy ass. It's more like them doing cheap theater to distract people from whats' going on. I can't say I'm not bothered by the double standard. They make palaces with no authorization yet when I was young and living at a house, we needed to wait months before we got permission to build a concrete ramp, in our own courtyard, so that the car could come in from the street into the courtyard because the difference of level from the street to the inside of our courtyard was pretty big. We weren't even constructing on the street, which is public property. Just our courtyard, private property. Yet if we had done it without authorization, we would have been fined. But it's the double standard and you know, that's that. Water under the bridge and more water to come from uphill. Let them have reserved free seats in schools and free reserved seats in parliament. Let them all them and all the rest. They need the help.

But this is just pathetic. This is cheap theater. 1 week. Today is friday. the fatso died on saturday or something. 1 week on TV all this was talked about. if i were an incompetent, evil, Romania-hating politician (probably not too far off here from what our political class is) I would pass the most absurd laws, make my friends rich with the fattest public contracts and do all manner of abusive things and nobody would notice. Because the press in their pockets and 90% of it is friendly to the government and because this is all that was spoken about. Maybe this happened. I don't know. And that's what's bothering me.

EDIT: Romania has big problems. 2 months ago our report card came back from the EU and the IMF and we failed half, HALF, of our objectives for 2013. We're running a deficit, a small deficit, but a deficit. Our GDP projections for 2013 growth were downsized twice from the initial 3.5% to the final 2.25%. And we took out the loan for 4bil euros. This wasn't an new loan, it was "planned" as it were that if we were to need it, we could have it. But we had to take it. And that's bad. 4bil euros/20mil people = 200euros/person (kids, unemployed, students and retirees included).
