"We don't like being pushed outside of our comfort zones. You know it right here on this campus. You know people sitting at different tables- you all living in different dorms. I was there. You're not talking to each other, taking advantage that you're in this diverse community. Because sometimes it's easier to hold on to your own stereotypes and misconceptions. It makes you feel justified in your own ignorance... That's America. So the challenge for us is are we ready for change?" -Michelle Obama

No Michelle, this is not the America I live in. The America I live in transends race for the vast majority of us. The America that I love has a great and diverse character. You ma'am are ingorant as to what is is to be American!

Oh and btw Mrs. Obama, were you talking about your Husband and his ignorant "typical white person" comment he made? Is that the "ignorance" you speak of?

"As she says, we all eat at different tables and live in different dorms...she was there. Yet she chose to attend a black church for 20 years with a preacher who rails against white America. Please, Michelle, lecture us some more about how we need to change.

Michelle Obama will be the Teresa Heinz Kerry of the 2008 election. I guess for that we should be thankful.

C'mon Reverend.

You're just a Republican who's out to appeal to certain ingrained racial divisions in this country in order to win an election.

If you were serious about a united country you'd agree with us in regard to important issues like: tolerance, social justice, economic justice, peace, sex education and safe sex, safe schools, inclusion, diversity, black people's entitlement to be racists due to past injustices & the end of an "on your own" society.

Sadly, you & your ilk choose to ever-divide this country & care nothing about being 'united' like the rest of us....

Yes, I mean who am I to be insulted at things like this, "typical white person" and "white man's greed" comments. Damn me! :rofl

You honestly disagree with this?
Because if you do, you are not an American, you are a guy living in a sheltered fantasy world.

I absolutley do not agree with Michelle's bigotes statments. She is telling us more about her world than mine "a typical white person"

Lets review my "sheltered fantasy world"

1. I live in the NYC metro area.

2. Lived in Newark, NJ for some time

3. Do volunteer work in Paterson, NJ

4. Set up networks on Indian reservations in NM/AZ when I was younger.

5. work and play with all sorts of varying peoples.

6. Seek out uniquenesses of other groups of peoples especially in thier cullinary arts. (Je's on williams st. is one of the FINEST soul food, no, FINEST places to eat.

Are you afraid of other peoples? Is that why you agree with her?

I grew up in the Mississippi Delta.
Whites and Blacks formed different lines.
Used different restrooms.
Ate on opposite sides of the cafeteria.
At a real young age I lived in a very small town and in that town the blacks were not allowed to cross the railroad tracks that divided their shacks from the actual town after 6:00 pm.

But as far as the quote goes, its not about race as you seem to perceive it.
Its about diversity in general.
Her examples are different cliques sticking together without much association with each other.
I remember that quite clearly from my college days.
Maybe its different now for you young folk, i don't know.
But when i went to college you stuck to your own kind.
Jocks, pot heads, chess geeks, brainy types, preppies, etc.

You seem much older than I. Didn't we outlaw that in the 60's?

You mean like her going to a black only church with a racist pastor?

You still have all the cliques but for the most part they are very well integrated from what I see. Sure there are some that have blacks hanging with blacks and whites hanging with whites, but race is really not much as an issue as Michelle's is making t to be,

Edit to add:

Missisipi delta eh? I love the food round there!

I liked Sylvia's in Harlem.

I think, just maybe, you are the one living in a sheltered life. I am not all that old, and the changes in my lifetime are immense. When I grew up, there was one black family in my home town, and they where the only minority. My small hometown was made up almost 100 % of people who thought that black people where lazy worthless welfare recipients.

Today, we have a large minority community in this town. My niece is dating a black kid...and no one cares. Down the road from me a Hispanic family lives, and that this the hot hangout for kids of all races, as they have a few horses, and enjoy letting kids take turns riding them. The diner I got to at least once a week, where all the farmers hang out(I go there to remember my father, who ate there 5 days a week, every week, and was treated like a king by the owners and workers there) is now not just frequented by many minorities, but they are sitting at the same tables with the old farmer guys, drinking coffee and bitching about the weather, just regular guys.

I am incredibly proud of our country. We have, in the space of 50 years went from back of the bus for minorities, to a place where the above not just can happen, but does with increasing frequency. Things are not perfect, racial relations can and should be improved a ton...but I think in some ways, the momentum is such that even if we did nothing, things will continue to improve. Michelle Obama really misses the key point. It's not 'are we ready to change'. You could not stop it now if you wanted to. The question should be 'what have we done right to get all the improvements of the last 50 years, and how can we improve and accelerate the changes'.

People sometimes seem to get so caught up in the problems that do exist, legitimitely, they they forget the progress we have made, and don't see the growing momentum in the right direction.

Laws and reality are not aways the same.
I was not even born until 70.
And when i was a young child for a black to cross the railroad tracks after dark would land them in jail for loitering or whatever charge could be created.
It just did not happen though. They did not dare cross the tracks.
We lived right on the other side of them. And never once saw one try to cross.

First of all, her church is not all black.
But with that being said, I only perceive some of Wrights comments to be racist and not by much.
Most of what he said that people find so offensive has already been said by plenty of white people. Just worded differently.
Our own CIA officials that retired due to Bush, have clearly stated the same things about 911, just without the drama attached.

People seem so shocked to discover that Blacks think we created Aids to kill them. And you think its just a radical racist opinion.
While i agree that its a ridiculous notion, I also happen to know that the MAJORITY of blacks have believed this for decades.
The majority of blacks are not the ones in NY or the ones you watch on TV.
The majority live in the south, are poor, and do not even have a high school education.
The majority do fully believe everything Wright said and have said it long before Wright.
I've lived in areas with a 50% black population for about half of my life.
While most whites listen to Wright and think, "OMG what a racist animal".
Most blacks see our reaction and are simply dumbfounded with the thought of, "Why would they deny these things".

Rather than using Wright as a political leverage tool, you should be opening your eyes and realizing that we have a real problem within our country.
Wright is wrong about some things. And he is also right about some things.
The problem is that he does speak for the majority and most whites can not seem to accept that.
Rather than attacking Wright and other blacks and writing them off as idiots, we should be listening and trying to debunk their beliefs.

I have not been to there in some time. I know there is a great Jewish deli there.

When I lived there racial tensions were very high. White people like me stuck out like a 2000 watt light bulb. Even still I learned a lot and made many many friends.

Again anecdotal (as was my statments about where I live) so we have two diverging viewpoints.

And actually it is 1 in 10 according to a 1990 poll. (first one I found)

The AIDS 'Plot' Against Blacks - New York Times

That is not a "majority".....

Uhm wright is part of the "problem" that keeps us from moving foward. Look at obama's comments on the subject. Is that really moving foward?

When I lived there racial tensions were very high. White people like me stuck out like a 2000 watt light bulb. Even still I learned a lot and made many many friends.

According to michelle obama that is not possible...

They are just as big of idiots.

The biggest idiots are the ones that refuse to listen to our enemy and literally think they attacked us due to religious differences or McDonalds.

We were attacked due to decades of meddling with their nations during the cold war.
We assassinated leaders, toppled governments, controlled them every which way with our money and power. And did so with zero regard for them. Only caring how things benefited us.
We continue to do these things.

Wright might be a moron in many ways.
But he is a step better than the Neo Cons that listen to propaganda and think the world is out to get us.

What is the message & how will it be put in to action by government policy?

Michelle Obama neither has or makes government policy.
And she was not even speaking of race specifically, but rather about diversity as a whole.
Her message was about overcoming diversity.

I refer you to (Q2) of Osama's letter to America. In it he states what we must do in order for him to stop attacking us. Among other things are those you listed as not being reasons.

It is just as ignorant to say that he is not attacking us for our "moral decadance" as it is to say he is only attacking us for his percieved "injustices" in countries he is not a political leader of.

Again I refer you to bin laden's "letter to America". Google it Thought this is off topic./

Total BS.
You people twist things all around trying to make political gain while completely ignoring the message.

What political gain am I trying to make here? I am calling it as I see it. Please explain what my "gain" would be.

Michelle Obama neither has or makes government policy.

She was campaigning on behalf of somebody who has.

And she was not even speaking of race specifically, but rather about diversity as a whole.

She was speaking of how diversity hasn't been realized because of ingrained racial divisions that have long existed. How does she and her husband plan to change that? I'm assuming that government policy would have something to do with it because Obama's wife is bringing it up at campaign rallies.

Her message was about overcoming diversity.

What?

I thought diversity was a good thing?

I think it's totally meaningless myself.
