What, really? You just said that, right? Do you even understand what you just said?
"Affirmative action is a policy used by colleges and universities to improve the educational opportunities for minority groups (including minority races, genders, and sexual orientations) that are commonly and historically discriminated against."
What you're saying is that because minorities FINALLY got, after three hundred years, what you and your ancestors had from the moment they took their first breath in this country because they're obviously white, they should shut up, be silent, don't make noise, take what they got and be happy we gave it to them. Is that right? Because they can now be hired for a job they're qualified for over another guy that's totally unqualified for but is white and had that advantage for many generations, they should just shut the hell up and don't complain about anything.
I have seen a lot of discrimination here, both overt and well concealed. Yours is the former. You will never be part of the solution to this country's problems because you are precisely the problem.
WRT AA, I used to be one of its staunchest defenders, the idea
sounds wonderful.
The execution of that idea however, has been a nightmare...not just for "white people"...for everybody.
I wish it worked but it doesn't, not as applied anyway.
Reparations is easy...what is the modern day equivalent of forty acres and a mule?
I'm actually serious here because at the time forty acres and a mule wasn't "a lovely gift" but it was the modern day equivalent of a small farm and a light tractor, so it's not like it was something to sniff at either. Po white dirt farmers would be equally happy with another forty acres and an extra mule.
So if you were to value it, what would it total out to today?
Convert it to a home loan package, like maybe a set of rebates or something similar, which makes the purchase of a home easier.
Add in some college tuition, stop redlining all the insurance and real estate, (legislate it out of existence) stop overcharging at supermarkets located in predominantly black neighborhoods (yes, "black people prices" is a very real thing in the South, and even some parts of the North!)
But of course the devil IS in the details. It is going to be difficult to match these things with people who do trace their lineage back to slavery.
It's going to be difficult because the old slavers MADE it difficult on purpose.
So, it's not like reparations is going to be easy to do, but it's an easy problem to figure out HOW to do in theory.
As long as it is limited to just the folks who are traceable back to slave families we can try to execute it.
