Will football ever be the same? I love John Madden, and am saddened to see him go.

John Madden Puts Down the Microphone
By Jeffrey Marcus

John Madden, the Hall of Fame coach and one of the most recognizable voices in sports broadcasting, has decided to put down his microphone.

NBC Sports Chairman Dick Ebersol announced today that Madden had decided to retire.

“It’s time,” said Madden in a statement released by NBC Sports. “I’m 73 years old. My 50th wedding anniversary is this fall. I have two great sons and their families and my five grandchildren are at an age now when they know when I’m home and, more importantly, when I’m not.”

Madden, who has been an N.F.L. broadcaster for 30 years, was an analyst for “NBC Sunday Night Football” since 2006. Before that, Madden provided analysis and commentary for Fox and CBS, where he had a long-running partnership with Pat Summerall. He jumped to ABC to do Monday Night Football Broadcasts before moving to NBC in 2006. His last game was Super Bowl XLIII on Feb. 1 in Tampa when the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals, 27-23.

As a coach, he led the Oakland Raiders to the Super Bowl XI title in 1977. His name is also associated with the most popular sports video game produced by EA Sports, and his visage used to grace the cover of the Madden NFL Football.

Yeah this is a bummer like the day howard cossell got canned.

I know some people bag on John Madden recently, because he uses lines like "When your winning, your usually playing good football", but I really liked the guy. Its kind of like listening to your grandpa tell you a story. You've heard it before, and you know what he's going to say, but you love the guy so much you just let him talk and soak it up.

His voice is iconic in football, and its going to be missed.

never liked him, he never shut up

I don't think there's anyone ever who knows the game of football better than Madden, and I certainly appreciated his take on teams, players, and match-ups.

I know alot of people who didn't like his delivery, but you are spot on with this, the proof, he's had a video game franchise in his honor for almost two decades now. Madden will definitely be missed on-air.

He once said during a playoff game "This is a must win situation for both teams".

That kind of insight into the game cannot be bought for any price.

To me, this is proof that Madden was awesome.

Is that what they call pulling a Yogi?

You can pull my Yogi.

"Boom, Dorse is a horse."

Turducken

The man was gracious and professional. He worked with a pickled Summerall and never got mad on the air about it.

no way
that is hilarious :lamo

It was while he was still with Summerall. I was watching the game and I laughed my ass off. I didn't see it commented on anywhere afterward, but I remember it as the second-funniest thing I ever heard a sportscaster say.

The #1 funniest was by the great Harry Carry one game when he noticed a couple sitting behind the dugout with a "Just married" sign in front of them. While the newlyweds were on camera they kissed each other and Harry, the funniest man to EVER call a game, said "Isn't that cute. They kiss after every pitch! He kisses her on the strikes and she kisses him on the balls"

That, my friends, is why even though I'm not a Cub fan I consider Harry to be the greatest ever.

Madden is a football icon. Gone perhaps, but never forgotten.

My question is could they just get Frank Caliendo to sit in in his place next year

I hate that guy, worst impressionist ever, he doesn't even do a convincing Frank Caliendo.

Professional sports...

Outside of government, about the biggest waste of time and money that exists.

You forgot bottled water. That is the biggest waste of time and money.

Just a coincidence. After all, he still has Tony Simpson down in Dallas to gush on and on about as he throws interception after interception in a major game. I'm sure he could've gotten a few more years of man crushing over his field goal fumbling ass.
