A question to conservatives: Has Obama ever done anything right?

He left Gitmo open, which I'm sure became quite an easy decision for him after those first "briefs" he was given after taking the oath of office.

He extended the tax cuts, but he's trying to raise them again now in his new budget, so scratch that.

Other than that, no.

(He loves his wife and kids, which I respect greatly in any man.)

As the title says, I am wondering what the conservatives on this board think: has Obama ever done anything right? If no, what specific things has he done to make everything he has done wrong? If yes, what things has he done that you agree with?

Yes, he's done a couple of things I approved of. The Afgani "surge", for one; glad he listened to Petraeus (or whoever) on that. There was another thing he did that I liked, but it slips my mind just the now.

On the whole though, I haven't approved of most of his administration's actions.

He extended the Tax cuts, Surge in Afghanistan, and he broke his promise and keep Gitmo open.

Well, he extended the tax cuts very reluctantly. If we hadn't had a Repub victory in the House I don't think he would have; it was more of a compromise move.

Gitmo... yeah. You know, I'm not entirely comfortable about Gitmo, on the whole I consider it a necessary evil as we have dangerous prisoners-of-war that can't be turned loose and don't need to be in the US Justice system either, but that doesn't mean an extra-territorial prison sits easy with me. Overall though yeah, I'm glad he decided to be pragmatic on Gitmo for now.

Perhaps by default; Gitmo* is still open for business and he just extended The Patriot Act*. For all the evils of the Bush administration, Rumsfeld noted the entire structure created by Bush 43 to protect this nation is still intact under Obama.

Other than that... it's truly difficult to find anything, and some of the above he said he would undo... so it comes with an asterix*.

The problem with Obama is he lied. He's not a uniter, he's a divider. He is a radikal in the mold of Wright and Alinsky. His actions reveal he doesn't believe in the line "there is no Red America or Blue America, there is the United States of America."

The man is all "words, just words."

He's a hard left radikal. The only thing he's been able to moderate if we can believe his wife is his addiction to smoking.

BY all accounts he has done a good job of combating domestic terrorism.

I wish I could say he has done more that was 'good'...I really do. I love my country over ideology. However his foreign policy has been without focus, his military strategy and leadership is non-existent, he economic strategy is raise taxes and spend more federal dollars, he didnt even discuss cutting the fed budget until the republicans but the smallest amount of muscle behind their hustle, his healthcare proposals (lets be honest...the Pelosi/Reid Healthcare proposals) are..well...anyone? It doesnt really go into effect until 2014...and we truly have no idea what the end product will look like or cost. Unemployment has gotten worse not better. The job market hasnt improved. The stimulus money saved some jobs, created far fewer than have been lost, and enabled failied and/or failing state governments to continue the practices that got them into trouble.

Now...in fairness...he has been no more of a failure as has been the democrats and republicans in congress.

I've got a follow on question:

What do you believe John McCain would have done better as president?

Who knows? Maybe nothing...which is why McCain was a lousy choice for the republicans to run. He is as much a 'maverick' as the quarter fed mechanical ponies outside of K-Mart.

My guess is McCain would have had a more clear mission for the military. What that would be is unknown...but it is unlikley he would have simply criticized Bush, then copied his tactics and programs.

I doubt McCain would have been *much* better. Our choices in the past election really sucked. I did not vote for McCain in the primary, btw.

yes.

the downside is, with John McCain as President, we wouldn't be having a conservative resurgence when we need it. so short-term gain, long term loss.

Just thought of another thing I like: His new budget includes a 2-year pay freeze for Federal workers. I just hope it includes Congressmen, SCOTUS, etc. It would be soooo disingenuous if it didn't..

I like the overhaul of the student loan program.

Every person i have talked to thats actually used government run health care, such as Canada and the UK, have nothing but good things to say.

LOL, you mean other than the 6-month waits to get a procedure done and the endless red tape?

Why do so many patients come here to the U.S. then and just pay out of pocket?

Things I've liked:

- Compromising with the Republicans to do a short term extension of the Bush Tax cuts. Wasn't what I'd prefer, but better than his original alternative.
- The Afghan surge in general.
- Maintaining the Bush Time Table with regards to Iraq.
- Keeping Gitmo. My thouhgts on the location is much like Goshin's.
- The way he handled the shooting in Arizona.
- Extension of the Patriot Act

If McCain had been elected, the Supreme Court would have been surrendered to the right-wing activist agenda. Obama's election saved the Supreme Court from extremists for at least the next generation. That alone was worth electing Obama.

Sorry for the delay, I had a short posting suspension. :)

I do appreciate all of your comments, and to the person who asked about a republican asking democrats about Bush, I would be glad to answer what I think Bush handled well and what I think he did not.

But other than that, I think if more pundits discussed politics like this we could see more clearly where we agree and where we disagree. Also, it would highlight how all parties are really just doing what they think is best for the country!

You make the mistake in assuming pundits are concerned with honesty and truth. Pundits are entertainers that have a niche in politics. They face no consequences for blatantly lying or misrepresenting Their loyalty and pay check is tied to viewership.

I'm pretty much too young to recall all of Bush's 8 years, but I'm hard pressed to think of anything that Bush did that I approved of. For the record I voted for Obama and so far I feel his job performance to be rather mediocre. He's not the utter disaster that extremist conservative hacks would have you think he is, nor is he the messiah that mindless liberal dick-sucks think he is either. Judging from his first two years in office, if I had to rank him among all presidents like those lists that historians make, he'd be somewhere in the twenties in my book. If I were given the opportunity to go back to 2008 and vote for another candidate, I think I could potentially have voted for Hillary instead of Barack in the primaries. I also harbor a great deal of respect for John McCain but I liked the 2000 McCain much more than the 2008 McCain.
