Yeah, you may be right. It may have been too much change, too fast- and the trends we are seeing around the world today are just a backlash to the pace of modernity the last 2-3 centuries: secularization, democracy, the retreat of religion, the rise of modern science and its questioning of old worldviews on our place in the universe in everything from evolutionary biology to cosmology, women's rights, the fight against racism and tribalism, the rise of international trade and global interdependence, etc, etc... It's all been very dizzying.

It's very possible that there WAS too much hubris in thinking that humans and their societies could change that much that fast. It has created a sense of vertigo and motion-sickness. Sociologists have a term for the inertia of society to too much change: cultural lag. Today's conservatism is likely a reactionary movement against all of this movement and an expression of such cultural lag.

It reminds me of a book I read many years discussing the rise of religious fanaticism and terrorism in the world. It actually points to this sense of motion-sickness as a major reason for the rabid distrust of science and anti-intellectualism, and the rise of fundamentalist religion, in the modern world. We are only 57 year from Jim Crow.. that means people 57 yrs and older grew up during Jim Crow and that mentality elements had not yet died out, and we all know, Jim Crow racism infected every area and segment of our systems within society and peoples lives.

The young people today, see the vile and malice of that kind of past.. they detest it... and they will not try to recreate it in the future. Change is Real... Obama tried to wake people up to the need for Change 12yrs ago, but White Nationalism bigotry and vile, belligerence and attacks agenda, fought it every way they could.
Now, here we are more than a decade later, coming to the realization of what Obama brought to us, 12 yrs ago.
We would be so much further ahead if racist and ignorance has not pushed it narrative and people had not become weak minded and submitted themselves to be influenced by right wing narratives.

Is the demand for protection of basic human rights and dignity- like the right to food, clean water, shelter, a basic education, and access to healthcare, even if a family has hard times, too much?

Making something a right does not remove it from scarcity. Food still has to be raised and prepared. Basic materials still has to be shipped, and doctors and teachers have to be trained. Declaring something a right on paper does not do anything for any of that.

Every other developed nation on the planet is doing it. I’m not sure why it’s so difficult here.

Not really. Very few nations actually guarantee any of the rights you talk about, and the ones that do are like cuba, or north korea, where instead of sharing wealth, you're just sharing misery.

What you're seeing in the (few) successful countries, is the result of effective government. Something we USED to have, but lost. Now idk if you've been to places like detroit, or chicago, or sacramento, do those places look like they're governed well to you?

What’s worrying are the trends. Up until the late 1970s, the world looked like it was going to leave radical religion behind, leave racism behind, embrace science, embrace ideals of human rights, adapt a more just and equitable economic system, etc…

Then, we had the Iranian Revolution, the rise of Thatcher and Reagan in the west and their successful crusade to crush the middle class and reinstitute plutocracy, the rise of Evangelical mega churches here in the US, the rise of the ultra-orthodox Jews in Israel, the resurgence of petty nationalism, isolationism, and xenophobia everywhere from the Balkans to the US, a new love for populist strongmen all over the world reminiscent of the early 20th century right before the world wars, , etc…

What happened? You have to admit the trends are worrying all over the world.

Things were worse in the 70s. For example, gay people were openly publicly ostracized. What we have above is the rise and fall of your optimism.

Your rights are a granted by the Government, any delusion you have others wise is a delusion. You live as does the rest of us, in a GOVERNED SOCIETY, with REGULATORY PROGRAMMING.. That has always existed and will always exist.
Don't think for one minute the Inalienable right to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness, means you can do anything. Liberty functions within what the Governing Parameters Establish, Happiness is not something allows anyone to do anything... (just because it makes some asshole happy to be racist, or go murder people, does not means they get to pursue that claim under some delusion they have the rights to kill others because it makes them happy to do so". as to Life, no one has stopped anyone from the act of living not using the time in living to make way for food, water and shelter, and if people choose they can create conveniences and comforts by the labors of their time in living... Some countries Government does not grant the rights you have in this country.

So don't get it twisted to think that you have the "right to do anything", "at any time", "by any means", "any where". No body has stopped any right winger for doing anything that fits with the laws of this land, nor has anyone stopped any of them from doing what ever fits within the parameters of Regulatory Governing Statues.

America Governance was not designed for creating Savagery its has principle of Civic, Civil and Social Structures that Accommodate a Wide Variety of Cultural Habits, as long as those habits don't violate the laws, the statues and ordinances and policies.

For those who think Government are not designed to help people, are delusional and caught in some selfish consumed aims to deny something within and unto society.

what a diatribe.. oh yeah i really don't understand i cant do anything,.. geez what rhetoric. the difference between rights and being governed is a balancing act, but I DO DEMAND that they at least follow the outline we have as LAWS until such time as they modify them PROPERLY and if they do not, then I will have recourse. If enough people want recourse, proper action will be taken to restore our laws and democracy to what it is properly defined as.
