I realize it takes a bit of higher order thought, but it’s not unreasonable to picture a scenario where not having this genetic storehouse may lead to significant disaster, financial primarily, but certainly not unreasonable to think the effects may cause some degree of suffering and death, potentially in a large population if this program- which is basically a cheap insurance policy- goes away.
