It would be great if both sides of this debate stopped pointing to things that that are irrelevant. For example most of the shootings in Chicago are gang on gang. No gun control bill would stop that, just as no bill will stop crazy people from doing crazy things. That is not to say we can strengthen controls in a logical way and prevent some incidents.

Obama retreated from Iraq and see what is happening there today. Whoops, I thought this was about Iraq, It's about Chicago. No difference, we'll soon be hearing of IED's going off on the South Side. Heck they're even killing just outside Obama's house.
Gang wars have made one of our biggest cities into a war zone, and we're fighting over gun control?
Gun control doesn't work. Gangs don't care what the gun laws are. That much is obvious, or should be by now.
So, what does work? How do we get rid of gangs, or can we? What is it that keeps them going and encourages people to become involved in them?
This is a serious question, and is not limited to Chicago or New York. We have a terrible gang problem right here in River City, as it were. Gangs are active all over the country.
The murder rate in Chicago is almost 60% of what it was in 1994.

It did drop a good 15% after the Heller Decision tossed Chicago's lame
anti gun acts against its population. Its only "news" today because of
ofailure and it being his "home" town.
What works. Neighborhoods cooperating with police to remove criminals from the streets. People taking responsibility for themselves, their children and their neighborhoods by fighting back. Prison sentences and punishments that actually meant something.
I would say more prosperity, but hell, good jobs are leaving, not coming, so we will probably start seeing more and more neighborhoods with this kind of crap going on.
What they need to do is get a bunch of Rednecks to come over, drink some beer, have a Bar-B-Que and point out the bad boys. Then let the Rednecks show the locals how to "get're done".

The rednecks are coming! The rednecks are coming! One if by land, two if by sea!
Well, I figure, even a shot never gets fired, after a weekend of 200 or so Bubba's and friends running through the neighborhood in their pickups drinking beer and playing country music, they will do just about anything to make sure they don't come back again.

Every single one of the people shot and/or killed were shot after 11.45 PM. That is what they all have in common. Most were shot in the wee dark hours of the night and the last one was shot after 4 AM. What the hell is a 16 old doing hanging at 11.45 PM?
At 16 my daddy would have kicked my butt and the butts of everyone in the vicinity if he'd found my 16 year old ass hanging out at 11.45 PM. Sure I was able to on a few occasions, but only with special permission, otherwise I had to be home by 11.00 PM.
Here's a Risky Suggestion for Chicago:
Curfew for troubled parts of town. There's no question that certain parts of the 2nd City (children and adults) are in need serious adult supervision. Start by curfewing minors, follow by doing the same with paroled felons, those out on bail, people from other neighborhoods, people convicted of drug violations. Keep them off the street. Bars and lounges in the troubled areas close at midnight.
Police should target known previous offenders their associates and people who fit offender profiles. Yes, profiles. As a cop you'd probably be wasting a great deal of your time targeting a little grandmother in a wheelchair coming home from church at 6.30 PM on Wednesday night, no? Screw a bunch of political correctness. Get real and make the neighborhoods safe. Those people bloody well know who the offenders are.
Make parents responsible. If they are unable to control their kid, the kid is removed from the home and the parent loses whatever government benefits are connected to the child.
Now, that just might work.
Do the rednecks get to carry assault rifles over their shoulders, or do they have to settle for their 30:06 deer rifles?

Officials: Murder, intimidation kept $11 million-a-year gang going.
The top leaders of one of Chicago’s most violent street gangs have been charged in a sweeping racketeering case that alleges they controlled their West Side drug empire through pattern of intimidation, kidnappings, shootings and murder dating back to the mid-1990s, according to an affidavit unsealed today in Cook County Criminal Court
Before sunrise today, police armed with "no knock" search warrants fanned out across the Chicago area surprising dozens of leaders of the Black Souls, including Cornel Dawson, known as the gang’s chief, and Teron Odum, described as Dawson’s second-in-command. Also arrested were a number of “top runners” and “supervisors” who authorities say control the gang’s street operations.
The 78-page affidavit alleges the Black Souls ran an $11 million-a-year drug operation and protected the enterprise with violence that included at least seven murders from 1994 to 2012. In all, 23 members of the gang have been charged with racketeering conspiracy, while 18 more face state drug or weapons charges, authorities said.
“The new street gang RICO law has enabled us to launch an unprecedented attack on the leadership of this violent and notorious gang,” Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez said at a news conference today at the Leighton Criminal Court Building. “It is a game-changer for law enforcement in our war against Chicago street gangs.”
The arrests mark the first prosecution by the Cook County state’s attorney’s office under the gang RICO law, which took effect in June 2012 and was modeled after the 1970 federal RICO statute originally designed to go after mobsters. By classifying a gang as a criminal enterprise, the law allows authorities to hold leaders responsible for the gang’s actions even if they are insulated from a particular crime such as a murder or drug deal.
The law carries stiff penalties for those convicted of participating in a criminal enterprise -- from a mandatory 7- to 30-year prison term for racketeering conspiracy up to life in prison without parole for those convicted of murder under the statute.
The Black Souls gang was founded on the city’s West Side and is thought to have a half-dozen factions with more than 750 members, according to law enforcement reports.
Over the past decade, the federal RICO statute has been used against two Chicago-area gangs: the Latin Kings in Chicago and the Insane Deuces in Aurora.....snip~
