ALBANY – A program aimed at rewarding people who blow the whistle on illegal gun owners has yet to show significant results, says three police agencies in the New York.

In February of 2012, 11 months before the passage of the NY SAFE Act, Governor Cuomo’s office announced a four pronged initiative to curb gun violence. One of the programs was a cash reward for citizens who lead police to the arrest and confiscation of illegal fire arms.

Known as the “Gun Tip Line”, New Yorkers can call a toll free hotline to alert police if they believe someone they know has an illegal gun. The call would be picked up by state police and local law enforcement would be notified if the tip seemed reliable.

If there was an arrest the tipster would receive as much as $500

See that is another lie from you. A law has definitions as to what would be an illegal firearm. yes, the tip maker could screw up and report the wrong thing, but that does not mean you get arrested and charged with a crime. police know tips are often wrong. Maybe we can put it in Liberal terms. Suppose the government suddenly outlaws your bong, but says you can roll and smoke all you want. If there is a $500 reward for tips on illegal bong use, do you want the Feds busting into your house and checking your stash for illegal smokage? If you are legal you have nothing to worry about, but it is comforting to know that at any time the Feds might bust in and rummage through your personal shnit based on the claim of some conservative n'ar do well just because he wanted to see your Progressive behind hassled by a Federal crew?

Until these gun-grabbing assholes get lucky and actually pass one of their unconstitutional bills, and this measure is used to enforce it. That's what you don't get-- we're not stupid. We know that every "reasonable" measure they propose-- every one of which already an infringement of our rights-- is an incremental step to prohibition and confiscation, because that's what their leaders have promised them. They have said these things in public; they are not secrets, and yet they have the sheer unmitigated gall to say, with a straight face, that they are not pursuing the very goals they have promised to pursue.

How do you prove who is an illegal gun owner? Criminals don't usually go around bragging that they illegally have a firearm. This law looks like nothing more than an attempt to harass law abiding people.Chances are the only way you would know if someone illegally has a firearm is if you personally know the individual. Not much anonymity there.
