475 detained during immigration raid at Hyundai’s U.S. EV site: homeland security

Yes. Visas expire, and suddenly someone becomes illegal. I suppose contractors with hundreds of workers coming and going don't try to keep track. Is it odd, though, that they were all South Koreans working on a South Korean project? I don't know.
That they were all South Koreans working on a high profile SK company project is not coincidental. Something isn't adding up.

Republicans wont require it.

Texas won’t force private companies to use E-Verify to check workers’ immigration status, despite leaders’ tough talk

That is very surprising.
It's as if the Repubs just like to bash immigrant labor but give those who employ them a pass.
I'm shocked!!

Texas won’t force private companies to use E-Verify to check workers’ immigration status, despite leaders’ tough talk

Texas’ conservative Legislature has again and again refused to mandate that most private businesses use E-Verify. Experts say that Republican resistance is rooted in how the system could impact the state’s labor supply and economy.
So, Texas is admitting to a major illegal population. Are these the same Texans that put up barbed wire and wanted to shoot Mexicans crossing the Rio Grande? I wonder if the Gov figured out that after shipping them off to New York and Florida that he was suddenly short of workers ?

Perhaps.

But regardless, illegal activity, in this case large scale illegal activity, should not be condoned

Unless it's THEIR illegal workers.
Do you think ICE has ever raided Mar-a-Lago?
Do you think they ever will?
Not a chance.

Now, take that to the level of wealthy MAGA individuals.
THEY want exceptions, they are begging for exceptions, and now in Arkansas they are SUING for exceptions.

“We are aware of the recent incident at the HL-GA Battery Company construction site in Bryan County, Georgia,” said Michael Stewart, a spokesman for Hyundai. “We are closely monitoring the situation and working to understand the specific circumstances. As of today, it is our understanding that none of those detained is directly employed by Hyundai Motor Company."

If so, it looks like the other company. LG Energy Solution may be the culprit or a network of subcontractors who also worked at the site.

Good find.

Here's something critical from your article:

Those arrested had illegally crossed the border, entered through a visa waiver program that prohibited them from working or had overstayed their visas, Steven Schrank, a special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in Atlanta, said at a press conference Friday morning.

Please note that I bolded.

While I'm always highly skeptical of Trump's numbers & assertions, I do believe Trump substantially reduced illegal Southern Border crossings.

But note the excerpt claiming "or had overstayed their visas". My understanding is visa overstaying accounts for nearly half of illegal migration!

Trump hasn't addressed that, that I can see. And, I'm not sure what can really be done about it.

I've always felt that reasonably securing the Southern Border was doable given the political will, but fixing the overstay problem is going to be a yeoman's task.

Maybe that should be done by legal citizens. A recent report says there are more people looking than jobs, well now there are more jobs available for those folks to get. Maybe they need to take a job.

I hope there are enough workers qualified and who will accept the going pay and benefits that those taken away were getting.

I wonder if Hyundai will get slapped on the wrist for hiring them, or just let off scott free.
Hyundai makes cars not buildings. I doubt they hired these people but rather hired a construction company that did.

Republicans wont require it.

Arkansas is suing ICE for taking away their illegal workers?

A few years back, a Congressman from upstate New York publicly stated that removing all the illegal immigrants working in agriculture and the hospitality vectors there would grind the economy in his district to a halt.

If I hire a plumber to fix my vibrating shower head, and he ruins my bathroom because I didn't check to see if he had a license, who pays the damages?

What has that do with my post? If I hire a company to renovate my bathroom and they hire an illegal to do that work, it's not my problem

I think those who are overstaying their VISAs will continue to be ousted in these planned, legal raids by the Trump administration. Might give worry to others who think they are home free with their expired Visas, and they might think of self-deporting instead of finding themselves arrested and then deported.

You know damn well many who say they want jobs want no part of work or job training.

Sure it is. They have much of your money already and the job will not be getting completed.

That's what I heard, they are planning to sue because ICE is taking away their farm laborers, same as Nebraska, but Nebraska is still in the begging stage so far.
I just saw the news story yesterday...now I will go and try to find it again.

So these are the murderers, the drug addicts, the pimps, the pushers Dumbo pledged to go after? Truly a case of mistaken identity. Mexican born cartels members for sur-r-r-re-e-e-e.

Yeah, that's the problem in a nutshell.

Without a good solution. Simply removing illegals from the workforce is not a solution. Why aren’t Americans hired for these jobs in the first place? If we allow foreign countries to build plants here, we should realize they are doing it to benefit their country’s businesses, not ours. Just as we do with our foreign factories.

I agree. I need more information. Something about detaining 400+ people at a plant employing 1,200 employees - then the employer saying operations aren’t affected - does not pass my sniff test.

Agreed. But we don't know what ramifications, if any, the employer will receive. You never know, Trump may surprise us.

If it involved construction workers at an adjacent plant, that’s a different story but having had first hand experience involving a Korean multinational setting up manufacturing in the US, the majority of the arrests being South Koreans also doesn’t pass my sniff test.

Perhaps. It's also possible the company/contractors are bringing people over from their national heritage nation. I've seen that in my city's Chinatown. The employing businesses are the facilitators of the illegal immigration.

I suspect Hyundai is going to let the contract company(s) hang on this. But with something this large, they obviously were aware of what was going-on.

Quite frankly, this is the type of illegal immigration enforcement I want to see. As long as the feds go after the owners & HR people. There's no excuse for committing this level of massive-scale fraud.

It sounds as if these workers were brought from SK to specifically do this work. If they did not have the appropriate documentation to work legally that's on the company that hired them. They should be 1) prosecuted to the max and 2) the workers sent home. My bet is only 2 happens.

I very much agree.

And, I find it hard to believe Hyundai wasn't aware of such a large scale illicit operation.
