Minneapolis is giving George Floyd's family $27 million.

It's going to come out of the tax payer's wallet for the most part. The city might have insurance.

Do you think George Floyd's life was worth that much? The average wrongful death goes for $500k to a million.

The previous wrong death record holder was that woman who called the cops to report a rape in progress. The cops showed up and shot her. Her family got $20 million.

I would have thought the city could have at least waited for the outcome of the pending trial before paying out any money. In less they know the whole trial is a foregone conclusion.

No. The government shouldn't pay people for having family members who decided to overdose on Fentanyl.

I just wanted to point out that your poll options are absolutely retarded and you should try harder in the future. We have to choose between "double" and "**** him, he's a drug addict!"? What is wrong with you?

The defense will use the amount of drugs in his system and the autopsy report and police body cams to support their contention the use of drugs was the main cause of his death not the choke hold.
I won't say the choke hold wasn't a contributing cause but .........No matter the pressure of violence will probably sway the jury and away from a fair trial.

"There was weed in his system, so that's likely the cause of death, not the 10 minutes of crushing his neck for no apparent reason when 4 officers easily could've hand-cuffed him and put him in a police car."

If he was OD'ing on fentanyl, the 4 officers could've easily handcuffed him and put him in the car. It's not speed, it won't make you super powerful where the only solution is crushing your wind-pipe for 10 straight minutes and holding it minutes after his body goes limp.

Other, but I wonder how much of that award was allocated to the lawyers involved (on both sides). Assigning a monetary value to anyone’s life (having been ended) is difficult and seems to be based more on the ability to have the (settlement or judgement) amount actually be paid than any other factor.

I don't understand how they ever come to these types of numbers.

It is highly unlikely that George Floyd was going to make 27 million dollars had he been allowed to live out his natural life.

Compensation is surely due, but how in hell do they get to 27 million? It's not arbitrary because that would look more like a clean round number like 25 or 30.

“No fees until we win.”

OK, we all know which way this is going to go, right?

I ain't gonna click either option or even "other", and here is why:

IF it was YOUR loved one, no amount of money would suffice, PERIOD.

BUT because it is concerning the death of someone else, you will weigh in with "too much" or "two little" and we ALL KNOW that a lot of you will make it about race, hence Floyd's family got too much because of his skin color.

BUT AGAIN, if it was your loved one, whether killed by a black, white or polkadot person, you would sue for all you could get and then say it was still not enough.

THIS kind of question arises when we stop respecting human life and human dignity and make everything about race, economics, personal feelings about something that happened to someone else but not us.

Can't we just be decent human beings? OR has that ship sailed?

For the record, if the amount had been less, or if the amount had been more, I would have been fine with me in either case, because it is what was negotiated between the family and Minneapolis. AND it was more importantly an admission of injustice and an acknowledgment of harm done.

AND while this will never serve as "closure" for the family, it gives them some satisfaction.

WE WOULD ALL feel the same way if it happened to one of our loved ones.

PERIOD!

I would suggest you watch the police body cam video and read the autopsy report....FYI it was fentanyl in his system at a rate of being enough to kill him. FYI the police did try to put him in the back of a police car and he was complaining at that time he could breathe minutes before the cop leaned on his neck. FYI the cop was following City law regulations for subduring a felon. FYI Floyd was being arrested for passing a conterfeit $20 bill at a local store.

That is how I read it too, so the poll question, in a court of law, would be considered a "leading" question, meaning that the person posing the question has a predetermined bias, and is looking for confirmation that their bias is the right one.

A poll question would simply have asked if the amount was too little or too much without the commentary.

that is not what the city paid for, and you know it, and that is such a canard I can't believe it was made by a person who thinks they are intelligent.

That he had lethal levels of fentanyl in his system is an objective fact. That he fought with the police is also an objective fact.

nice of you to be so sure of your facts when it was someone else's death, guaranteed you would sue to the max if it was your loved one.

His windpipe was not crushed. That is pure hyperbole.

Ok, let's play devil's advocate. He's overdosing on fentanyl, and they already have him in the police car completely subdued and unable to harm anyone. So instead of helping this overdosing man, they take him out of the car, put a knee on his neck for 10 minutes, and push him over the edge to death, not seeming to care that he goes completely limp, where they continue to hold. What is the reasoning behind that?

FYI the cop was following City law regulations for subduring a felon. FYI Floyd was being arrested for passing a conterfeit $20 bill at a local store.

Which could happen to anyone. I might not notice I had a counterfit. Does that mean I should be violently attacked by the cops and have a knee on my neck for 10 minutes? What is the reasoning behind that?

His breathing was cut off from the knee on his neck. Your attempt to argue semantics is rejected.

IMHO, it should be illegal for the law firm to award themselves 33% of the settlement. They often do less work than a real estate firm which may get 3%. It should be left up to a civil court judge to decide how much is allocated to legal fees not some poor fool who signed a ridiculous contingency contract.

But we place monetary value on life all the time in a court of law. ;)

It is generally based on how much the person would have been expected to earn over his lifetime AND in a case like this, a little extra tossed in to punish the offender, the city of Minneapolis in this case, to dissuade them and others from doing it again.

Given this, it is easy to form an opinon on the settlement.

This is excessive is the only rational conclusion a non biased review could find.

Autopsy means "see for yourself" -- but sometimes the autopsy doesn't show you everything. A forensic pathologist cannot accurately determine the cause of death and the manner of death by looking at the autopsy findings alone. That's because there are several ways to kill people without causing devastating injury to the internal organs. Asphyxia from neck and chest compression is one of those ways.
the Hennepin County Medical Examiner issued a press release, and subsequent to that, the full autopsy report, which indicated that the cause of death was "cardiopulmonary arrest complicating law enforcement subdual, restraint, and neck compression," and that the manner of death was homicide. They listed arteriosclerotic and hypertensive heart disease, fentanyl intoxication, and recent methamphetamine use as other significant conditions contributing to death.
This means that Floyd stopped breathing and his heart stopped beating (cardiopulmonary arrest) because of the injury caused by his restraint in the custody of law enforcement officers, to include asphyxia from neck compression. Asphyxia means that there is a lack of oxygen going to the brain.

You don't know that. It could have been compression asphyxia from the knee on his back, or the drugs (probably isn't recommended to mix fentanyl and meth, in any concentrations), in addition to his poor physical health, and being restrained, or a combination of all those factors.

Don't need you to mansplain the case to me, I'm well acquainted with the facts. A crushed windpipe would have been readily apparent in the first autopsy, but it was not.

Why should we have an opinion on this, other than to demonstrate how WE "feel", the sum was agreed to by the two parties. A PERSON IS DEAD, and since it was not someone who we loved, we seem SO detached in our reactions.
AGAIN - IF this was one of your's, would any amount suffice?
